Princess of Doriath, daughter of Dior and Nimloth. While very young she escaped from the Noldorin attack on Menegroth in which her parents were slain, and grew up in Arvernien. There she married Eärendil and bore him two sons, Elrond and Elros. When the sons of Fëanor descended on Arvernien, she cast herself and the Silmaril into the Sea. Ulmo saved her and turned her into a bird, in which form she flew to Eärendil at Sea. Together with three crewmen they sailed Vingilot to Aman, winning through the Shadowy Seas because of the Silmaril. While Eärendil went before the Valar, Elwin spoke with the Teleri of Alqualondë, the kin of her great-grandfather Elwë; she later persuaded them to sail the ships of the Host of Valinor.
Elwing was the first to make the choice of the Half-elven, and decided to be of the Firstborn. When the Silmaril and Eärendil were set in the sky, Elwing settled in a tower on the northern shores of Aman, whence she flew to meet her husband when he drew near to Arda.
