Sindarin
Death FA 473
Noldorin Elf, son of Fingolfin, father of Gil-galad, and High King of the Noldor in
Middle-earth. In Eldamar he was friendly with Maedhros, Angrod, and Aegnor, and was
one of the group of young Noldorin princes who favored the pursuit of Melkor and the
Silmarils, although he loved Fëanor little. Fingon led the vanguard of the host of
Fingolfin during the return and fought in the Kinslaying.
On the return to Middle-earth Fingon resolved to heal the breach between the House
of Fëanor and the rest of the Noldor, and, aided by Thorondor, he heroically freed
Maedhros from his chains on the face of Thangorodrim. He then settled in Dor-lómin
(until the coming of the Edain) and fought valiantly in the Wars of Beleriand; about
260 he defeated Glaurung.
Fingon became High King on the death of his father during Dagor Bragollach, but he
himself was slain by Balrogs in Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
The original (Quenya) form of his name was probably Findakáno.
