Noldorin princess, the daughter of Finarfin. Galadriel was the only woman to play a prominent role in the debate of the Noldor following the theft of the Silmarils, and, eager to return to Middle-earth, she was one of the leaders of the host of Fingolfin.
In Middle-earth she dwelt with Finrod on Tol Sirion, but when her brother moved to Nargothrond she went to Doriath, where she married Celeborn and was instructed in wisdom by Melian. She had one child, Celebrían. At the fall of Doriath she probably fled to Arvernien or the Mouths of Sirion. Galadriel was the only leader of the revolting Noldor to survive the Wars of Beleriand, and at the end of the First Age a ban was set on her return to Valinor.
In the Second Age Galadriel dwelt for a time in Lindon and Eregion, and then founded and became Queen of Lórien, which she made on the model of Doriath and the Cirdle of Melian and sustained with the aid of her own power and that of Nenya, one of the Three Rings, which was given to her at its making. Throughout the Second and Third Ages Lórien remained safe from Sauron, for Galadriel's power was such that she knew his mind but hers was closed to him, and she could protect Lórien from assault by any power less than Sauron himself.
During the War of the Ring, Galadriel gave shelter and great gifts to the Companions of the Ring, and she refused the One Ring when it was offered to her by Frodo. Because of this, and because of her endless opposition to Sauron, at the end of the Third Age the Valar permitted her to return to Valinor. Galadriel fulfilled her age-old desire in TA 3021, when she went over Sea with the Last Riding of the Keepers of the Rings.
Galadriel was very tall and the greatest beauty of the house of Finwë; she had the golden hair of her mother's kindred.
The Quenya form of her name was Altariel. She was known as the Lady of Lórien, Galadhriel, the Lady of the Wood, the Lady of the Galadrim, the Sorceress of the Golden Wood (by Gríma), the Mistress of Magic (by Faramir), the White Lady, and Queen Galadriel.
