| Sindarin 'sparkle-brilliance'
Noldorin Elf, daughter of Turgon and Elenwë. She returned to Middle-earth with Turgon and
dwelt with him in Nevrast and Gondolin. Idril was loved by Maeglin, her first cousin, but she disliked him.
In 503 she married Tuor; this was the second wedding of the Eldar and the Edain. The next
spring their son Eërendil was born.
Fearing the fall of Gondolin and foreseeing the treachery of Maeglin, Idril secretly built
a tunnel leading out of the city, and when Gondolin was invaded she escaped by that road
with Tuor, Eërendil, and a small following. Idril and the survivors fled down Sirion to
Nan Tathren and later to Arvernien. When Tuor grew old, he and Idril sailed into the West;
it is not known if they were admitted to Aman.
Idril was very beautiful and had the golden hair of the Vanyar. She was known as Celebrindal,
Silver-foot. The Quenya form of her name was Itarillë or Itarildë.
