Death FA 496

Noldo, second son of Finarfin and father of Finduilas, second and last King of Nargothrond. In Eldamar Orodreth was very friendly with the sons of Fingolfin. During the council which led to the revolt of the Noldor, Orodreth alone of the grandchildren of Fëanor spoke for moderation and reflection, but he joined his brothers in the revolt.
In Middle-earth Orodreth held Minas Tirith under the over-lordship of his brother Finrod. He defended the fortress and the Pass of Sirion during Dagor Bragollach, but in 457 he was driven out by Sauron and fled to Nargothrond. Orodreth was regent of Nargothrond while Finrod went with Beren on the Quest of the Silmaril. His power was undermined by Curufin and Celegorm, but when they were driven out Orodreth was named King.
At first Orodreth maintained Finrod's policy of secrecy and isolation in Nargothrond. Because of this (and his hatred of Celegorm and Curufin), Orodreth refused to join the Union of Maedhros, and later he refused to meet in open battle the forces of Morgoth raiding Talath Dirnen. But in the early 490s he was persuaded by Túrin to change his policy, and for a while his realm was cleansed of Orcs. Morgoth retaliated by sending a huge army, led by Glaurung, against Nargothrond. Orodreth marched to meet the enemy, and the army of Nargothrond was slaughtered at Tumhalad; Orodreth died fighting in the front line.
In general, Orodreth appears to have been cautious but somewhat weak of will.
