Sindarin Elf, King of the Woodland Realm, father of Legolas. At the beginning of the Second Age, Thranduil lived in Lindon, but before SA 1000 he established a kingdom in Greenwood the Great. This kingdom survived, despite attacks by the great spiders and the Orcs and a war with the Dwarves, for more than two ages of Middle-earth. In TA 2941 Thranduil led the Elven forces in the Battle of the Five Armies, and during the WR he repulsed an attack from Dol Guldur. After the fall of Sauron in the WR Thranduil fixed the southern boundary of his realm as the Mountains of Mirkwood, and the Woodland Realm flourished well into the Fourth Age.
Thranduil had a great love for jewel and riches, and it may have been that this love led him to excesses, especially with the Dwarves.
Thranduil is the Elvenking of The Hobbit.
