Christmas Party

HO! HO! HO! Santa will be making an appearance at our December meeting on the 20th. Free Polaroid pictures of you and Santa [ok - the kids, too!] are available. This one is a family event. Bring goodies to share and plenty of homebrew, of course.

Beer gift exchange rules: Bring a couple of bottles or a six pack of your favorite homebrew and get someone else's' in exchange!

We will also be raffling off a blanket lined jacket with the Hopunion logo on it, size XL. The jacket was on display at last month's meeting and there was a lot of interest expressed in owning it. Raffle tickets for this are going to be a hot item, so buy several to increase your chances (and if it doesn't fit, your humble unemployed scribe is available for donations).

Unfortunately I will not be able to grace you with my presence this month. I will be flying to Phoenix that evening to spend the week at my brother's house.

IPA Results

The judging of the IPAs was conducted at last month's meeting. There were 4 entries this time, although two were supplied by Kevin. One of Kevin's beers was kegged 2 hours before the meeting and ended up in first place. My entry suffered from a slow and incomplete fermentation that I am still trying to figure out what went wrong. The final results are below:

  • Kevin Fawcett (keg)

  • Tom Barnes

  • Kevin Fawcett (Bottle)

  • Brian Thatcher

Don't forget that Winter Warmers will be judged at the January meeting, so fire up them brew pots. Tom was nice enough to print out some guidelines and one of his own recipes for last meeting. Reference English Old Ale in the style guidelines for ideas.

Club Officers

At the meeting last month, it was decided that the club officers would remain the same for the coming year. However, there will be something new. For most meetings Duane will appoint an "Overlord of the Month" whose duties will be to conduct that month's meeting. We will also try to continue the beer style brew-off but with fewer styles spread throughout the year.

Winter Warmer Tasting

The decision was made to move the Winter Warmer sampling to November since the December meeting is typically the Christmas Party. The beers tasted were selected by Tom Barnes and there were a dozen to be cracked open for enjoyment. Among them were three that everyone should be familiar with, Deschutes Jubelale, Pyramid Snow Cap and Sierra Nevada Celebration. If you are not familiar with these beers, go out and try them (along with Full Sail Wassail, somehow missing). They are what many think of first for Northwest Winter beers and all are tasty in my opinion.

The rest of the beers included a nice selection of regional winter releases. They were Alaskan Winter Ale, Anchor Merry Christmas Ale, Big Sky Powder Hound, Bridgeport Ebenezer Ale, Fish Winterfish, Hales Wee Heavy, Maritime Pacific Jolly Rodger, Portland Brewing Mac Frost, and Orchard Street Jingle Ale.

The only disappointment was the Orchard Street. I was told that last year it was really good, however this year they really overdid the ginger and it overpowered the beer. The Jolly Roger has been on cask the last couple of times I have been to the Engine House in Tacoma and it always makes a nice beer to start the evening with.
