The article from RPIWatch

We were looking around on google, trying to search for our website (curiously enough, it doesn't show up at all), when we found this article on rpiwatch.org:

posted by chris on Thursday August 29, @10:02AM
from the if-they-did-it-once-before. dept.

The Shirley Ann funlovinjared writes "First our school gets trashed in the ratings, then this. I don't know who made it but its more evidence of the growing unhappiness at RPI."
It's worth noting that it was the Faculty Senate that helped force out our last President, R. Byron Pipes. While they didn't do it directly, the faculty's vote of no confidence helped to sway some of the Trustees. The Trustees seem generally up on Jackson's job, though, and it's unclear how influenced they'll be by Student and Faculty dissension.
There's also a number of factual errors in the "Impeach Shirley" site. First, RPI's #16 ranking in "Professors suck all life from materials" is actually down from #9 in 1998. Granted, we shouldn't be on it at all, but going down is better than nothing. Second, construction on the Biotech center started in mid-may, just after commencement, which could hardly be regarded as "the middle of the summer". Third, it's worth pointing out that there's no method to 'impeach' the President of the Institute. Only the Trustees can remove her, and there's no way for the students or faculty to force the Trustees to even consider Jackson's removal, let alone actually make it happen.
Still, I'm sure there will plenty of fun-loving discussion of how to chuck the Most Honorable On High Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson.

Rebuttal

We have a rebuttal to this posting made by chris. We were a bit irritated at his listing of "factual errors" and composed the following response to his flame:

We, the authors of the "Impeach Shirley Campaign," would like to comment on the innacurate comments on our site. Firstly, the "impeach" thing is a JOKE. We are WELL aware that you cannot impeach the president of an Institute. It is a political statement. Sorry if you're one of the only people on campus who doesn't get it.

As for your comment on the Princeton Review ratings, we are merely stating what the Princeton Review has said in their ratings. We did not say that the ratings went up or down from previous surveys. Isn't it bad enough that we're merely in the top 20? So what if we've been down from #9. We still made it to #16 this year, over all 345 schools in the list. Please read more carefully next time.

We are not trashing the school itself. We are stating our opinions that the President is negatively affecting the lives of the students. ***This is America.*** We are free to state our opinions (as are you and all others) whether or not it offends anyone else. You are wildly inaccurate in your judgment of our website, but there's nothing we can do except reply in this forum.

Also, we have replied to your comments on when the construction occurred in the "Campus 'Beautification'" section (see above). We were here at school all summer and were witness to the progress of the construction. A mere month before school, they commenced construction again, probably in an effort to fool the incoming students into thinking that they had been working all summer. Putting up a fence for two weeks and paving over the old school field does not indicate progress. (Incidentally, there was no need to pave it for parking since that lot is at most half full all day.) Unless you were here all summer, then you can't really say WHEN the construction occurred. It's true, it started in mid-May, but it was put on hold for most of the summer while most students were gone and then started up again right before school started.

When we first started this campaign, it was a private joke. We didn't realize that so many people would support us, including many professors. The only work that we have done publicizing our website is telling some people when we give them stickers. We have only distributed less than 50 stickers. The Institute population is at least 7,000. Our distribution level is still pretty small, yet our website has received over 20 hits in the last 2 hours. We don't know where these people are getting the address, but it's spreading like wildfire. We have received numerous requests for stickers and emails stating general support. That's gotta mean something.

If you had a problem with the accuracy of our website, why didn't you have the balls to write to the author instead of posting on some other bulletin board? We just happened to come here while trying to search for our website using google. It just so happens that we can't find our own Impeach Shirley website, but could find your inaccurate take on it. Funny, isn't it. If you really think we were wrong, you should let us know so we can adjust it. We are willing to work with anyone who has ideas and information. We would appreciate any constructive comments. After all, we are only human.

We're hoping that chris reads this website often, but we also thought that we should share with everyone else as well. If anyone else has a problem with this website or has a correction on the information, then please feel free to email us at impeach_shirley@yahoo.com and we'll listen to anything anyone has to say. We are open minded people. By the way, thanks for posting the salaries for Dr. Jackson and her staff.

Update (9.13.02): Chris has since apologized about this incident. However, we still can't get a login on RPIwatch, which is a bit strange.
