Myths in Medicine

If we look back over the centuries, we can easily find many errors in beliefs. During the Middle Ages people thought that bleeding with leeches was a useful medical treatment. The Romans thought that amulets and magic were remedy to disease. These misconceptions were caused by ignorance. Our society today has come a long way since the Middle Ages, but the question arises... what are we doing that will be looked upon by future generations as obvious mistakes?

The Ignorance of Society

A true problem, in my opinion, that the human race has had since the beginning of time, is the ignorance of the majority of people. There is so much information out there that needs to be taught in order to ensure a person can make a sound decision. If they are not taught valuable knowledge, they cannot make the best decisions dealing with matters not truly understood by them. In other words, they will make bad decisions because they don't know any better. Only when we elevate the amount of knowledge known by the general population can we truly advance the society as a whole and correct the errors of our ways. If 1 out of 50 people is properly educated/ thoroughly knowledgeable and they go out into the world and do amazing research while the other 49 are not properly educated/thoroughly knowledgeable, we are missing out on the research and input of the 49 lives.
