Forsaken Memories : Chapter One

***

"He'll be just fine, Shiosai-san," the middle-aged man tried to comfort his wife, but Shiosai ignored his protests. She stared at the unconscious, pale form on the bed, a slim hand covering her mouth.

"It's heartbreaking that Kiji-onee-san was in the accident in the first place..." she whispered, taking a hesitant step forward. "But it's even sadder to think that Washi-chan lived. He has no place to stay when he wakes up, Kiiroi-kun." As she brushed aside stray bangs, Shiosai's frown deepened as she studied the handsome features. "Can he stay with us when he's well enough to? We never were able to have children, and Washi-chan lost his family. Besides, I feel as if I owe it to Kiji-onee-san."

"...Shiosai-san..." Kiiroi sighed heavily, shaking his head. "I would never think of leaving Washi-kun to live alone. Besides..."

He cut off when a low moan came from the prone form on the bed. With a slight gasp, Shiosai backed up, grey eyes lighting up when Washi moaned again, eyes fluttering open. "Washi-chan," she breathed, heading towards the bed, taking and clasping the hand which wasn't connected to an IV drip. At his name, Washi turned his head slowly, ignoring the dull pain which accompanied the movement.

His lips parted, and he mouthed something. When no sound came out, he frowned, then tried again, "Oba-san?"

"Hai, hai, Washi-chan." Shiosai smiled, "Kiiroi-oji-san is here too," she added.

"Shinigami-sama..." Washi murmured, struggling to get into a sitting position. With a slight hitch in breath, he managed, head hanging, bangs obscuring his view. "Shinigami-sama, what did you mean?"

"'Shinigami-sama', Washi-chan?" Shiosai shot Kiiroi a look, then turned her attention back onto her nephew, "Are you alright, Washi-chan?"

Washi raised head, gaze searching as he glanced around the room. Nothing even hinted that the Goddess of Death had been by to see him. Her words repeated in his head, and he gasped sharply as he remember her parting words, 'Until we meet again, Eagle Vision of Autozam.'

:Eagle Vision? Autozam?: he thought, slightly frustrated. :And who are the two beloved whom I have to find?: Lost in his thoughts, he wasn't aware of the two older people in the room with him until the doctor's voice managed to penetrate his mind.

"Shikaku-kun, it's good to see you awake finally," Shin-sensei said with a slight smile as he nodded towards his patient. He turned his attention back to Shiosai and Kiiroi, "You know that with both of his parents dead, he has no where to stay, don't you? He may be seventeen, but he's not yet old enough to be on his own."

"We'll take him in," Shiosai supplied quickly, and Shin-sensei raised an eyebrow.

"Are you really sure, Shiosai-san? Not that I don't have faith in the judgement of yourself and your husband. But, are you sure you can handle it?"

Shiosai nodded firmly, "Yes, mochiron. He was my onee-san's son, and I wish to take him under mine and Kiiroi-kun's wing. He'll be well taken care of, I assure you. And we'll also see to it that he gets the education he deserves."

"Wakatta." Shin-sensei nodded with a smile, "He's lucky to have relatives like you." Glancing at his charts, Shin-sensei added, "He should be able to leave within a few days. With plenty of rest, he should make a full recovery. His more severe injuries, such as broken ribs and the slight head trauma should clear up as well with time. No permanant brain damage." he nodded at Washi, "I expect you to make a one-hundred percent recovery, Shikaku-kun."

With another smile, Shin-sensei turned on his heel and left the room.

That night, Washi tossed and turned on the narrow hospital bed, surprisingly not falling off it. His face was twisted in pain as foreign memories, names and feelings invaded his dreams. And suddenly, the movement stopped as he jerked awake, breathing heavily as he clenched his fist. The words Shinigami had given came back, everything snapping into place as the final pieces came together in his subconsciousness.

"Lantis. Hikaru." he whispered, staring at the white sheets which were fisted in his hands. Slowly, he relaxed his grip with another shuddering breath. The vision of the tall Cephirian and the pink-braided Magic Knight eased the grip on his heart a little. They were his two beloved. They were the two which Shinigami had warned him to find...before it was too late.

What had she exactly meant by that statement? If he didn't find Lantis and Hikaru, would they end up dying? And what could he, Eagle Vision, do in the reincarnated body of Shikaku Washi?[1] Briefly he wondered if they even remembered him at all; at least if they remembered the part of him which was still Eagle Vision through and through...his heart, his soul; his longing.

A quirk of a smile appeared on his pale features, as he nodded absently to himself. Silently, he made a vow with himself. These new-found memories he would cherish and would fight to keep. No one was to take them away from him without a fight.

Not that anyone would be able to.

But most important of all, he had to find the two whom he loved.

With that thought in mind, Washi smile widened as he eased back down. Mind at ease with the new comforting thoughts, he fell back to sleep.

"Ne, oba-san?"

Shiosai turned to Washi, smile bright. "What is it, Washi-chan?"

"Ore...arigato gozaimasu, oba-san."

"For what?"

"For...for...everything. For being kind enough to take me into your home." he flashed a small smile of his own, yet it didn't compare to the natural brilliance that it had once been.

"No problem, Washi-chan. You were Kiji-onee-san's only son. It's the least I can do for her."

"Datte..." Washi sighed, and shrugged, "Never mind." he looked at the two story house in front of him. "Thank you," he repeated, more quietly.

"Well, standing around isn't going to help anything," Shiosai laughed, and started towards the front door, "Come on, Washi-chan! Kiiroi-kun fixed lunch, and I really hate the thought of keeping him waiting."

"Coming, oba-san," Washi supplied as he dutifully started following Shiosai's path, thoughts once again wandering. Three days had past since the visit from Shinigami; Two days since his awakening memories when he was Eagle Vision. Now he was heading into what was to be his home until he moved out. One hand moved down to his bandaged side, and he smiled ruefully. "A new beginning, a new life," he muttered under his breath. "Two times avoiding death, now to make it count."

Mentally he thanked whoever interfered that he managed to live as many times as he had. For it gave him a bigger chance of seeing Lantis and Hikaru again. :Which, will probably be worth any pain,: he mused, :Wait for me, Lantis. Hikaru. I swear I'll meet you again. Even if you won't know me as Shikaku Washi, I'm sure sooner or later, you'll remember me as Eagle. He is me. I am him. Even the change of looks won't defy the fact that I *am* him.:

He stared blankly at the uniform spread out on the bed, then raised an eyebrow. "What's this?" he asked Kiiroi, who was watching his nephew with a amused grin.

"Your uniform. You *are* going to finish your education, you know."

"Of course," Washi laughed, eyes sparkling playfully. Already Kiiroi had proved to be more of a father than his recently deceased one had been. Over the two weeks of his recuperation, Washi and Kiiroi gained a bond which made both of them more secure with the changes in their lives. With a shake of his head, Washi studied the uniform: dark blue blazer, white Oxford shirt, slacks same color as the blazer and a lighter blue shaded tie. "Yanagi High School...[2]" he stated and Kiiroi nodded.

"It's the high school nearest to our home. It's also a pretty well renowned one. I'm sure you'll be able to make a lot of friends *and* get a good education at the same time."

"New school..." Washi said.

"Washi-kun, the old high school you attended for first year is way to far away. There would be no sane means to get there."

"I'm not complaining, oji-san."

"Aa...well...you better get some rest, Washi-kun. First day of school tomorrow. It starts at the usual time, so it helps to get a good night's sleep."

"Oyasumi nasai, oji-san." Washi called as Kiiroi started out of his room.

Kiiroi stopped, pausing for a minue before echoing, "Oyasumi nasai."

[1] Shikaku Washi (last name first, as said in Japan) is translated to mean 'Eagle Vision'. Nifty, ne? ^_^;;

[2] Yanagi High School (Willow High School) is some made up high school. -_-; I had no real idea to what the high school Hikaru-tachi would attend...since all that's (briefly) mentioned are the junior highs which they attended. So...I made up Yanagi High School as the high school they attend in this fic.

^^ Wai!! Chapter One is COMPLETED! *stops* What did you think? I tried to keep any and all spelling and grammatical errors to a bare mininum. Did I succeed? =\ Hopefully I did. I have no one beta-ing this (*weep*), so I'm on my own. If anyone's *interested* in beta-ing (previewing of following chapters and editing), e-mail me?! I *really* need at least one beta-reader. Despretely. x_X Anyways...all and any feedback, it be good or bad can be e-mailed to kitsune_atarashii@hotmail.com *or* inarisama@yahoo.com. (Beta-ing requests also welcomed and embraced with joy!!) Don't know when Chapter Two will be out...
