Big Country played the Sutler Bar in located in the lovely Melrose/Berry Hill neighborhood of Nashville Tennessee Friday night. Using borrowed gear, the band had been out all day shooting film for a video for 'Fragile Thing,' the band hit the stage at 9:34. Far from a low key outing, the band played full of fire with a full electric set. The Sutler is a long time Nashville hang out famous for Beer Cheese soup and its old wooden bar with a Giant Mirror behind it. The room itself is quite cozy, the stage barely big enough for the band.
The set list included a healthy dose of new songs with a mix of classic BC. The Nashville crowd responded enthusiastically to the new material and even chimed in with three part harmony on the choruses to 'Chance' and 'Fields of Fire.' The set list was (to the best of my guesses on the new songs): You Dreamer (interrupted at chorus by Tony for equipment adjustment,) Driving to Damascus, The President Slips, Perfect World, I'm not Ashamed (including Harvest Home in the break,) John Wayne's Dream, Fragile Thing, I Get Lost (or I Get Hurt,) You Dreamer (this time all the way through- a much more forceful version than the Brighton Rock arrangement,) Your Spirit to Me, Dive Into Me (these two songs were the best of the outstanding new lot, I told Stuart they were keepers,) Wonderland, Alone, Look Away, Fields of Fire, Encore: Chance, In A Big Country, and a second encore of Neil Young's 'Keep on Rocking in the Free World.' The set finished about 11:22 with band and crowd in a euphoric sweat. Not bad for an impromptu show. After the set, the band signed autographs and posed for pictures with the fans who hung out. I can't express how much fun it was to talk to the band and the fans. I can't wait for a return show (which they promised!) Personally, I had been hoping the band would play out since Stuart moved to Nashville about three years ago. To have it happen about 5 blocks from home and in a great intimate atmosphere like the Sutler was almost too good to be true. Dreams stay with you, indeed. |
