The bands original line up consisted of myself, Dave, Ian (guitar) and Steve (drums). After a couple of months of rehearsals and a decidedly thrash metal sound (at this point Ian wrote and pinched most of the tunes), we played one pitiful gig before disbanding, much in dismay of the results.
Dave and I stayed in contact and decided that we would continue the band, with a harsher, discore sound, much in our preference to the previous material (we scrapped all the old songs.) All we needed now was a drummer and guitarist.
I had been in another short lived Newcastle band circa 1992, Final Warning, playing a few gigs and packing up due to line up difficulties (a severe handicap of being unable to recruit a permanent bass player.) Neil had drummed for this band, and Scalzey had played guitar for a while.
I had not seen Neil for about 4 years, but I bumped into him and mentioned that we were looking a drummer. He offered to play for Incendiary Device, much to our delight. A few days later Scalzey was soon on board and we booked our 1st practise. Another ex-member of Final Warning (Brian) also turned up to fill the position of another guitarist, however he left after the first rehearsal, due to commitments with his other band. (Neil was still drumming with Loaded 44 and Scalzey was singing with Sawn Off.)
Things moved swiftly on and we had our first gig at the Cumberland Arms in Newcastle with Death Site and Sawn Off, which we felt much better about than the gig with the 1st line up. Gigs followed with Cria Cuervos, Unkind, Social Insecurity, Swellbellys, Left for Dead etc.
Neil left Loaded 44. Sawn Off split up, and sort of reformed with different members as Boxed In.
In January 2001 we recorded a 12 track demo CD at Rooftop Studios in South Shields. The CD was recorded by an old friend who played drums for Hellkrusher, Senile Decay, Grudge and plays in Blunt Wound Trauma. We had a right good laugh, recording the whole thing in one drunken afternoon.
February saw us in Edinburgh with Path to Destruction and Social Insecurity. Scalzey had a broken wrist, so he doubled up on vocals and we played as a five piece, with Dave’s mate Ken on guitar. The gig was packed and we played a belter set. Everyone was really happy…
…especially Scalzey who met his new girlfriend there, and eventually moved to Edinburgh for good. He continued with Incendiary Device during visits back to Tyneside, and Ken fit in very nicely on guitar, soon becoming a permanent fixture.
Neil, Dave, Chris, Ken to date…
September 02, recorded 2nd demo, which we put down live. Available from the band and I think Steel Wheels Record Shop in Newcastle have a few copies.
We’ve played a couple of low key gigs in our region and after falling out with most of the rehearsal spaces in Newcastle (Pauline from Penetration actually accused us of pissing in her practise room! Cheeky Bastard!), we’ve relocated about 15 miles away to a lovely little studio in the country, where we continue to produce a barrage of hate fuelled noise…

Band splits and eventually Dave and Chris start up a new band - vile addiction.
