 My Two Precious Angels

My Two Precious Angels

By Shakira

My husband and I were High School sweethearts. We dated my last two years of High School and were very much in love. My Senior year of high school, January of 1999, I found out that I was pregnant, and was I scared. My mother and boyfriend were by my side at all times and reassured me that everything would be okay.

I went to all of my doctor appointments and did everything I was supposed to do. This was my first pregnancy so I had no idea what to expect. I was already small before I got pregnant and I didn't think I would gain much weight and I didn't. I only gained five pounds throughout my pregnancy. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about the endure.

I was twenty-six weeks pregnant, I started cramping really bad so I went to the emergency room. There they told me that I might have a stomach virus and they sent me home and told me come back if I have any more symptoms. The next day I stayed off my feet all day but that night I started cramping again. Again I went to the emergency room, this time they kept me and told me I had dilated ten centimeters and it was time for me to start pushing. About ten minutes later I delivered a one pound ten ounce baby boy which was rushed to NICU because he was so premature.

The whole time I was in the hospital I stayed in the NICU with my baby. At the time I was young and didn't fully understand what was going on. I went home two days later but visited my son three and four times a day for twenty-six days. On the twenty-sixth day my son passed away due to respiratory complications. No explanation was given to as why I went into premature labor. I cried everyday for a long time. It took me a long time to get passed the loss of our son.

That January I began college and that was kind of hard because I wasn't ready to face the public, but I did. Once again, while I was in school, college, I discovered that I was pregnant again. It was December 9, 2000. I quickly changed doctors, for no reason at all. I was very scared due to the complications that occurred during my previous pregnancy. I started going to my appointments every month as I was supposed to and I informed my Doctor of my previous history and they reassured me that everything would be okay.

When I was twenty weeks pregnant, I was given an ultrasound that verified that I was having a girl, and was I glad. Two weeks later I started spotting and again I went to the emergency room. By that time I had no cervix and I was given Mag to try and stop my labor. A couple of hours later an ultrasound was done verifying that my baby was breech and half of her body was inside my womb and the other half was not. At that time, the doctor diagnosed me with having an incompetent cervix. All I could do was cry. Not long after that, my contractions got stronger and I started pushing. Not even ten minutes later I delivered a fifteen ounce baby girl. About an hour later she passed away.

It has been three months since I gave birth to my precious angel Mariah and almost two years since I gave birth to my son Markeiveon and I miss them just as much today as I did when I lost them.
