GURDWARA RAKAB GANJ SAHIB
----------------------------------------------

This Gurdwara is situated
near the Parliament House in New Delhi and is the closest building
to the Central Secretariat and Rashtrapati Bhawan and the Cathedral Church.

Gurdwara Rakab Ganj marks the site
where the headless body of Guru Tegh Bahadur was cremated
when he was beheaded in Chandni Chowk.

None of the persons had the courage
to lift the body because of fear of the wrath of Mughal King.
While the head of the Guru was picked up by Bhai Jaita and taken to ANANDPUR sahib,
the body of Guru Tegh Bahadur had for hours together lied in the Chandni Chowk.
It was only late in the evening that Bhai Lakhi Shah,
a devotee of the Guru carried away the body to his house at PAHARI RAISINA,
the present site of Gurdwara Rakab Ganj and set fire ta the whole house.
Lakhi Shah put the remains of the Guru in a Urn and buried them on the very
spot where the body was cremated.

This Gurdwara was originally built by Sardar Baghel Singh in 1783.
When the British Government was building its capital, New Delhi.
A wall of the Gurdwara was demolished
because it stood on the way of road to be constructed according to the building plan.
This gave rise to a serious protest from the Sikhs who threatened to launch a morcha.
The Government relented and the wall was restored and a bend in the road was accepted.

The present building
is a compact multistorey pyramidal in design, built on a raised plinth and
decorated with rich architectural embelishment.
This Gurdwara gives a replica of Taj Mahal in Agra.
While the Taj mahal was built by Mughal King Shah Jahan,
this Gurdwara was built by one sikh devotee whose name even does
not appear anywhere in the Gurdwara complex.
Baba Harbans Singh ji has built new Langer Hall and Lakhi Shah Vanjara Hall.
The Delhi Prabandhak Committe also has its new office in the Gurdwara Complex.
