Islamic Terms
Abbasids: second Islamic dynasty to rule the Middle East from 750-950 CE.

Al - Andalus: name for the western Islamic region, which is now known as Spain

Bagh: Persian word for garden

Caliph: also pronounced as  Khalifa, head of an Islamic community and successor of the Prophet

Emir: prince or commander

Imam: the leader of an Islamic community

Islam: the name of a religion, centered on the Quran, which is the word of God passed through Muhammed, the Prophet of Islam.

Islamic: an adjective used to describe objects, buildings and other things that are related to the religion of Islam

Iwan: a large, central archway, which was used in Mughal architecture for mosques, gateways and other buildings

Janissary: a group of officers and soldiers that were loyal to the Sultan

Mahal: palace, or also named after complex rooms

Mecca Medina: the holiest Islamic city, place where Muhammed, last Prophet of God, was buried

Minaret: a tower, pillar in or near a mosque, which serves as a place from which the call to prayer is made

Mosque: Islamic place of worship, each Friday at noon, Muslims gather here to pray together

Mughal: the name of the empire that ruled India from 1526-1857

Muslim: a person who believes in Islam

Qibla: name of the wall in a mosque, which faces the city of Mecca. Whenever Muslims pray they face Mecca, which is the holiest of Islamic cities.

Quran: the holy book of Islam

Roza: also known as fasting

Shah: royal name, used by Persian and Mughal rulers

Shi'a: a person who believes in Shi'ism

Shi'ism: one of the major sects in Islam, Shi'as believe in the importance of the family of the Prophet as well as the Quran in Islam

Sunni: one of the major sects in Islam, Sunnis believe in the     importance of the Quran as well as the sayings of the Prophets

Umayyads: was the first Islamic dynasty in the Middle East from 650-750 CE, and then continued in Spain from 750-1009 CE
