SUSANNAH (GOOD) KAUFFMAN

Susannah Good was born July 20, 1781 in Shenendoah County Virginia, she was the youngest daughter of Wilhelm (William Good) and Maria (Snavely) Gutte. Her family came to America, with 3 of their childern in 1770 from Hesse Cassel Germany and lived in York County Pennsylvania. The childern were bonded out to farmers to pay for their passage to the New World and worked for 3 years before regaining their freedom. During this time they had to make their own clothing at night in the most primitive way. They were not allowed to use any of the time during the day to supplu their own needs. Due to this, they suffered many hardships.

Susannah's father acquired his land in 1772. He got his orginal tract of 380 acres from Charles Stapleton who acquired it from Lord Fairfax, who had obtained a large land grant from England's King George III. A large part of this land was surveyed by George Washington when he was a young man. Almost below the Natural Bridge, between Lexington and Roanke Virginia, is a large boulder on which Washington put his own and Lord Fairfax's initals and used a a starting point of his survey.

The Good's lived in America during the Revolutionary War, 1775-1776. The Family heirloom, a German family Bible was buried in a large chest along with other household items to protect them from the Tories. This Bible is a marvel of the bookmaker's art, printed in Zurich,Switzerland in 1690, bound in leather with brass hinges and a clasp. The only relic left, it was handed down from 5 generations, since Susannah Good Kauffman came into possession of it, to the youngest member of each family. Mr Ora Sanders being in possession of it and no decendants gave it to the Henry County Historical Society, in New Castle Indiana in 1935, where it was placed on exhibit and can be seen there anytime.

Susannah married David Kauffman about March 18, 1800 in Shenendoah County Virginia. And to that union 7 childern were born. David Kauffman served in the War of 1812, and was mustered out in December 1814. David died on December 18, 1814, supposedly just 5 days after returning home from the war from injuries he recieved there, and is buried in the Good Family Cemetery near Orkney Springs Virginia. Susannah came to Henry County about 1830-1835 and settled in the Middletown Area. Susannah died November 5, 1855 in Henry County Indiana and is buried in the Painter Cemetery, located in Fall Creek Township, Henry County Indiana.
