It's basically for separating heavy sand and cons to blacksand and gold. 

It could be used for testing an area by screening for big rocks  then  dumping the rest of the pan into the sluice kinda like a quick pan. 

Or when you know you got gold and don't want to pan it all the way down you can throw it in a bucket then run it through the sluice later.  Use a snuffer bottle  to get the gold out of the pipe
