The Day Two Became One

Our wedding story...

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, and nothing could make it more perfect. Then it came time for the wedding to actually take place.

First, my Aunt Jeanne and all her side of the family were making a 2 hour drive to be in the wedding, and on the way, my cousin got sick in the car, so they were late for rehersal. Which wouldn't be so bad, except that our minister had decided that he didn't think we should be married. He had just told us a week before that he didn't think we were ready, and that if he did marry us, we would be back for divorce counseling in 2 years (by the way, this morning we started planning a bar-b-que for our second anniversary, we aren't in counseling yet). Anyway, he used the missing court as an excuse to leave, so we had no rehearsal.

As the day progresses, I leave to get my hair done, only to get to the salon and find that my hairdresser left. I leave grumbling about never coming back, to find another salon. I run all over town, and discover that on this one day of the year that I need to get my hair done, every salon in town is booked all day. So I go back to the church, but by the time I get there, the wedding is supposed to be starting in 2 minutes.

I rush to the dressing room, and throw on all those slips and various other things (how did women live in the days when this stuff was part of everyday dressing?), all I had time to do was brush my hair back, and toss on my veil. It turned out ok though, because we had a country wedding, so with no make-up, and my hair simply pushed back, it went with the theme rather well.

The only thing that didn't fit the theme, was my gown. John was a cowboy, so I didn't have much choice, the guys wore black jeans, matching western shirts, and cowboy hats, but I wasn't settling for that. My gown was going to be perfect, I was only going to have one, so it would be the one I had always dreamed of. The gown has sequins and pearls all over the bodice, with a white satin skirt that ended in a 4 foot train with lace inlays of roses. I think that gown cost more alone than all the other's clothes together, but it was worth every penny. If I had the whole thing to do over, the gown would be the only thing I wouldn't change(and some days, the groom is on that list, lol).

So now we start the wedding, but my DJ is nowhere to be found, so the photographer has to DJ for the ceremony. This also wouldn't be so bad, but he has no clue when the music is supposed to start, so instead of the whole court walking down the isle to one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, the court walks down in silence, and I walk down to the beginning of the song instead of the ending(which is the part about the bride).

I'll also mention here that a friend of the family has offered to video the wedding, to save us some money(we will get to the relavence of this later.

I'll also use this oportunity to tell you a little about our court. My Maid-of-Honor was Aunt Jeanne, a woman I look up to a great deal. My Bridesmaides were Karen, a very good freind of mine, who has always stood by me through the good and bad. And a friend of the family (it gets interesting here too). I had asked her sister to be my Personal Attendant, and help me get dressed and do my make-up, that kind of thing. And I had only planned on having one bridesmaid. But when I didn't ask her to be a bridesmaid (because she was due to have a baby a couple of weeks before the wedding) she got upset, so I asked her to be a bridesmaid, and figured that it was her discomfort at having to stand up there after just giving birth. And thier brother was to give me away since he had been like a big brother to me all my life.

But, the night before the wedding, I got a call from his wife, and she said that they wouldn't be able to make it. So I was out of one bridesmaid, one Personal Attendant, and one person to give me away. What joy, my mom ended up being the one to walk me down the isle, so that wasn't bad, but now the court was uneven.

On John's side was his brother Paul as Best-man, then his two friends Don and Mike as Ushers. Then came the children, my mom is a nannie, and the kids she was with at the time were all upset, because they couldn't be in the wedding, so again, I broke down and put them, and their one cousin in. Now we had two Jr. Bridesmaids and two Jr. Groomsmen (this was beginning to get out of hand as you can see). OK, now on to the kids that were planned upon. My cousin Zac (upset tummy and all), and John's son Josh, were the two ring bearers, and my cousin Becca, and Pauls daughter Kass were the two flower girls.

As you now see, it was a pretty big court for a small country wedding, but at least everyone was happy that they were included in the joyous occasion.

Now back to the ceremony, the minister, who normally does long, sentimental weddings, rushed through every verse, and did one of those Wam-Bam, thanks a lot prayers, and the entire ceremony lasted 15 minutes. Then we get to the photographer's section after getting bird seed all over us. The pictures were great, we got tons of them, and only a couple were messed up by closed eyes or that kind of thing. But again, the minister was mad about it all, so in the ones with him, he wouldn't even smile. I have about ten pictures, and he has this nasty look on his face in every one.

After the photos were finished, the minister left, again, after telling us he was locking the church. Our reception was in the pavilion, so we wouldn't have a bathroom for anyone, but we figured, at least he won't be here to ruin anymore of the day. I will add that I have not set eyes on the man since, and I have refused to return to his church.

We have now reached the reception, the DJ had shown up, so it almost looked like something would go our way. Then we got to the cake....John's Uncle had told us that he wanted to make our cake as his wedding gift to us, he is a master chef, so I was all for the idea. The cake looked ok, I had expected better after hearing all the wonderful stories about the cake he made Paul, but I figured that everyone has a bad day, and it was still pretty. But then we had to eat the thing. The cake tasted like flour, and the frosting like crisco. On our first anniversary, we got it out of the freezer, and took one bite, then our dog wouldn't even finish it.

Now, you may be saying, yes, this was a pretty bad day, but we haven't finished yet......

I mentioned the video, now after we got it, we realized that while she was videoing, she was also scoping the men in the room. The video of our wedding has great shots of the photographer, the Ushers, the Best man, and John's cousin from Philly. Oh, and there is one spot were you see the back of my head, and we even got to see her daughter get yelled at for not sitting still. As for the ceremony though, well, it didn't look like there was anything going on from where she was standing, so you just have to imagine what is most likely happening. And to hear the vows, you have to have the volume up so high that the nieghbors complain.

So now you can see, the most productive thing that happened on that beautiful August day, was now instead of people calling me Thomston (my maiden name was Thomas) they call me Berger, Burger, Booger, or something of that sort.

I hope this has given you a laugh, because that is all I can do looking back on that disasterous day. All I can say is, boy am I glad that I never have to do that again!
