Night Post Office - 1950
A Night Post Office (NPO) is a Post Office, which works before
and / or after normal working hours of a post office. A NPO became a necessary
when cumpolsary holiday on Sunday was introduced on and from 7th May 1950.
with a view to serve the public and to give more facilities to them, NPOs
in 12 major cities of India, were opened during the year 1950, which were
as follows:-
1. Ahmedabad (Railwaypura TSO), 2. Banaras (HO), 3. Bombay (Dadar TSO, Bombay
GPO and Kalbadevi TSO), 4. Calcutta (Bara Bazar TSO, Esplanade SO, Rash behari
Avenue TSO and Shyam Bazar TSO), 5. Delhi (Chandichowk TSO), 6. Hyderabad
Dn. ( Hyderabad HO), 7. Indore (Indore City TSO), 8. Jaipur (Jaipur City TSO),
9. Kanpur (Kanpur HO), 10. Madras (Mount Road TSO), 11. New Delhi (Eastern
Court SO) and 12. Sholapur (Sholapur HO).
The then, NPOs were opened on Sundays only. between 8.30 AM to 8.30 PM and
used to do all post office business, without any late fee charges, as on week
days, except booking of Money Orders, Saving Bank and Sale of National Saving
Certificates.
The normal business hours of a Post Office were in between 7
AM and 5 PM except Saturdays when postal transcations were stopped at 3 PM,
except issue of Money Orders, Saving Bank business and Cash Certificates,
which were trasacted in between 10 AM and 3 PM except Saturdays when trascations
were closed by 1 PM.
Today, NPOs are in all cities of India. Timings and functions
do change as per public requirements.
The cancellations of these post offices show the words NPO Night etc. Three such examples are shown here.
