Thane - Turbhe - Vashi - Nerul Railway Line: Fact Sheet
A presentation by Rajan Mathew

The Thane-Vashi line has finally been commissioned on 09th November 2004 after years of anticipation. A special train for Vashi was flagged off by the Union Railway Minister, Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav and Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh from Koparkhairane station at 5 pm.

A few FAST FACTS about the project
1. The project directly links Thane and Navi Mumbai, and is set up at a sanctioned cost of Rs. 403.39 crore, shared between CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation - a Govt. of Maharashtra Undertaking) and the Indian Railways in the ratio of 2:1.
2. Five new stations on the route - Airoli, Rabale, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane and Turbhe. Rabale station remains to be completed and will be commissioned by the end of 2005.
3. Out of the 47 bridges in the 18.5 km section, six are major and 41 are minor bridges.
4. For the present, 12 trains (6 pairs) will ply on this line - six in the morning and six in the evening.
5. The trains will ply along a 18.5 km route through Vashi, Sanpada, Turbhe, Kopar Khairne, Ghansoli, Rabale and Airoli, to Thane. The project also aims to connect Thane to Nerul via Turbhe. This phase of the project should be completed within the a year of its commissioning.

OPERATIONS
The Thane - Turbhe Sanpada - Vashi section is double line, with both tracks operational. At present, only only one 9 coach  rake has been made available for the service. The rake is a SNPD (Sanpada Car Shed) Rake - 1500 V Serial No 712-715. this section, as with the rest of CR is DC right now. This is not a brand new rake (but was  polished up for the occassion), but in good shape. This one rake works the schedule, based at the VASHI siding.

The train to Thane has the board "THANE (HARBOUR)" and the Code is TH (although no indicators are operational yet). AFAIK, VASHI remains the same (VASHI - V)

Information from an official CR circular
Booked Speed 54 KMPH,
Max Speed 60 KMPH

For the first one or two months, the railways will run just 12 services a day — three from Vashi in the morning, three from Thane in the morning and similarly three each from Vashi and Thane in the evenings too. The present train schedules were decided after a thorough study of passenger requirements and traffic. If the need (for more trains) is found to be strong after two or three months, the railways will implement changes.

MY EXPERIENCE
Travel essentially was a very pleasent experience with refreshing station designs. The stations are aesthetically excellent and contemporary in design even moreso compared to the older counterparts of Vashi, Nerul or Belapur. Except for Turbhe (since the entire structure falls under one dome), the bulk of the construction for only TWO platforms (one line) has been completed. The final plan will allow for 4 platforms (two lines).
