Set in the expatriate community of Florence in 1938, young British widow Mary Panton travels to an Italian villa for some rest, only to find herself in the midst of a love triangle and political intrigue. When her older friend Sir Edgar asks her hand in marriage, then leaves her for a few days while she considers the proposal, Mary meets some provocative people at a dinner party and develops a relationship with an American man to whom she confides her dark secret. |
