"Your Roadmap to Success
presented by Shannon Lees of OfficeTeam
Attendees learned how to use the experience acquired during the economic downturn to take their career to the next level. Four lessons learned were:
In order to get to the next step we must be prepared by limiting the number of times we are caught off guard, be aware of what is going on in our department, industry and profession, and be comfortable by raising questions, asking for what you want and gaining support for your ideas. It is very important to take time to recharge your battery.
Lastly, we learned that we should set goals or objectives for the next 5 days, 30 days and 6 months.
6 students and several instructors from Bohecker's College/National Institute of Technology visited us. Several of the students have expressed interest in joining our chapter. And, they will be visiting us again for our November meeting. Bohecker's has requested that we come visit the Office Procedures class and speak to the students regarding CAP certification through IAAP.
3 new members were installed by our Membership Chairperson, Mary Ann Schaefer, bringing our total membership to 45.
The Ways & Means Committee held a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going into the Chapter general fund. The winner of the drawing donated her winnings to the Chapter for use in providing quality programs for the membership.
In appreciation for an outstanding job promoting IAAP and Indian Trails, Past President Janis Hittle CPS presented a special award to Cecil Giltz.
The first Home Interior candle orders were turned in. Delivery will be at the November meeting. The second orders will be turned in at the November meeting with delivery prior to the Christmas holiday.
With "Good Attitudes Can Be Good Medicine" as her theme, Kathleen Whitmer charmed everyone in attendance at this chapter meeting. As a cancer and heart transplant survivor who refused to "pack-up" in front of adversities and took an active role in her healing process, Kathleen was indeed an inspiration to us all. An author as well as a volunteer helping other cancer victims cope with their disease, Kathleen spoke about stress, cancer and happiness. We learned how to worry less and enjoy life more.

The Indian Trails chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals recently celebrated their 18th annual Administrative Professionals Day luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn in Twinsburg.
Fifty-eight representatives and administrative professionals from the Portage County area employers attended including Connie Switts, Ohio Division IAAP Treasurer.
Susan Straub, CPS CAP, President, welcomed the group and she introduced Barb Mast CPS CAP, who gave the invocation.
The official theme for the 2005 Administrative Professionals Week is “Innovation Advances Administrative Professionals”, signifying that administrative professionals have expanded their workplace roles dramatically in recent years, in response to innovations in technology and the changing needs of business. Innovative thinking is also a key factor in administrative professionals' efforts to streamline office procedures, provide efficient support to managers/supervisors, participate on work teams, manage multiple projects, and acquire skills most in demand by employers.
Not only was this a special opportunity to show appreciation for administrative professionals' contributions to the office team, it was an excellent time to open lines of communication and discuss mutually beneficial objectives -- such as supporting professional development, setting up well-defined career paths, upgrading technological tools to enhance productivity, and improving work processes.
After the luncheon, Straub introduced the motivational speaker, Leslie Yerkes, President and founder of Catalyst Consulting Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio. Her topic was “Beans – Four Principles of Running a Business in Good Times or Bad”. She presented a recipe for life and work that included ingredients such as; do what you love and you won’t work another day in your life (passion), bring the best of your whole self to work each day (People), make it an experience—treat everyone as unique and valued (Personal) and create confidence with consistency (Product). She concluded her presentation with this thought, “Pour some of each of these ingredients into your work and working relationships to experience satisfaction and success in all that you do.”
Members of Indian Trails Chapter and several local area businesses donated themed raffle baskets. Ticket sales to win a basket totaled more than $300 with proceeds being donated to The Center of Hope in Ravenna.
Attendees received a goodie bag full of free items donated by local area businesses. Door prizes were drawn from donations given by Saint-Gobain PPL, Kent Office Supply, Kent Floral, Home Savings Bank, AMETEK, The Davey Tree Expert Company and members of the Indian Trails Chapter.

In this session Mary Lou Skirbunt will give you new food for thought in her discussion of leadership, and will provide you with tools to help you develop your personal leadership skills. Seeing yourself as a leader is empowering and freeing. As you see your position in a new light, you will find new meaning in your job and in your life.
