Guy Pernetti, Executive Director, Kent Historical Society
The Davey Institute, 1500 N Mantua Street, Kent, OH
5:45 p.m.
The Underground Railroad was the widely popular term for the network of paths of flight, safe houses, and willing guides who helped slaves escape northwest from the American South to freedom before the American Civil War ended.
What an interesting presentation from Guy Pernetti, Executive Director of the Kent Historical Society! Mr. Pernetti spoke to members on the Underground Railroad, and we learned many interesting facts. Did you know that the black triangles used in the Flying Geese pattern in the quilts symbolized to the escaping slaves that a home was 'safe' for them on their travels 'north'? He sang one of the songs from that period which instructed slaves to “follow the drinking gourd” to freedom. This was referring to the North Star. If you have a chance, be sure to take a moment to visit the new location of the Kent Historical Society now located at 234 South Water Street in Kent, Ohio.
