Matt Richmond (Vocalist) of 'Always Out Numbered' Is quick on the draw
to do this interview. Goes to show why they seem to get noticed as they utilize all tools to get the name out there. A great sign for a young band (Formed in 1999)
INDIERAGE : What is your home town (Burlington On) music scene like right now ?
MATT : We come from a city/area that is just incredible. The amount of
really really good bands is just astonishing. Bands like Finger Eleven,
Grade, Jersey and Slurpy Mundae are all from Burlington. There are
also so many younger, new bands that will take off soon as well. The
Fullblast and Boys Night Out are bands to watch for from our area.
INDIERAGE : What is it about your bands sound that makes you different from those around you ?
MATT : Well we definately can say that our sound is reflective of our
placement on a map, and we are heavily influenced by local bands.
But at the same time, we take things that bands from here have already
done that we liked, and just added our own spin to things. It's the
collaboration of punk, hardcore, and pop and the way that we do it
that gives us our edge.
INDIERAGE : What seems to be your most popular song ?
MATT : That would have to be Home. An emotional rockin song just about
the love for friends, family, music and your home.
INDIERAGE : Do you guys work day jobs or is this your main focus right now ?BR>
MATT : As much as we would love for this to be our main focus, we all do work day jobs. Hopefully one day this can be all we need.
INDIERAGE : Has anything come about from out side Canada ? Any parts of the world who have picked up on you & your style ?
MATT : Our record label is based in Berlin, Germany. We actually just finished our first European tour which went really well. So far we are more popular over
there than at home, but our goal is to tour Canada extensively.
We have made it into the northern United States as well. But keep your eyes posted, wherever you are, Always Outnumbered will see you soon.
INDIERAGE : If there is 1 thing you want your fans to know about you, what ?
MATT : We mean this, we love this, and we have a great time doing it. And come say hello.
INDIERAGE : 7.what are the plans for the band right now ?
MATT : We are actually just working through a small lineup change and beginnning work on our next record which will hopefully be recorded by the end of this year.
INDIERAGE : What seems to be the bands biggest disagreement ?
MATT : Food. I don't eat vegetables, it's like I'm still 5 and get screwed because
they just don't want to eat at McDonald's every day.
INDIERAGE : What is the one thing the whole band always agrees on ?
MATT : The Band. We mesh really well, and any idea of tour, recording, anything, we are always willing to do almost anything and can agree pretty quickly and easily.
INDIERAGE : We know the radio & TV dictates what the average Joe listens
to, but what are your personal favourite listens ? Please be honest.
MATT : Hmmm, I've got so many, but to narrow it down I would definately have to stick to (in no particular order): Grade (Any album, they all rule), Saves The
Day (Through Being Cool), Jimmy Eat World (Clarity), Taking Back Sunday (Tell All Your Friends), Radiohead (The Bends), Dave Matthews (Before These Crowded Streets), I Mother Earth (Scenery & Fish), dude, the list goes on and on.....
INDIERAGE : Do any of the members have any other jobs that are music releated ?
MATT : Ian is working on a recording studio with Greg Taylor of Jersey, we will be demo-ing our new album there, and Sean was doing a co-op program with a record label this past school year.
INDIERAGE : Is there any strange or interesting hobby you guys do in your spare time to keep you sane...?
MATT : All we do is work, music, and party!
INDIERAGE : Who does your booking ?
MATT : Sean (bass) books all of our shows as he actually is working on his own
booking agency. We all drive so we usually borrow a car/van to go to shows, but
are looking into purchasing a vehicle for the band in the near future.
INDIERAGE : Are you a supporter of Sites like MP3.com ? Do you think they are valuable or just a neccassary evil. ?
MATT : I think it is definately a good thing. We got hooked up with some great
people and shows in Michigan after they found us on MP3.com. It can really do a lot for you, and you get to give people a good sample of your music for free.
INDIERAGE : What do you guys think about the Much Music Video awards ? To the world, they must think Canada has only 5 bands. What do you have to say ?
MATT : Ha, ha... Yeah, I know what you mean.
The awards really don't mean shit, so in that perspective it's really just an excuse for Much to get some majour promotion. But at the same time you do get to check out some cool performances, and if you're lucky, see Avril Lavigne's butt crack ! Hells yeah!
INDIERAGE,/B> : What is the biggest sham you ever recieved by the industry ?
MATT : Just to get on promoter's backs. We played quite a few badly promoted shows on our european tour, and it really did make a difference. They were all sent the tour posters, and quite a few of them and most of them were just put to
waste. It was really a shame and it can do so much for a show.
