One of Toronto's hardest working indie bands has kept it real now for 7 years.
Indie Rage interviewed Richard (guitar, vocals, & song writer) of Broomfiller to see what was up & how they manage to keep their hold on the trip.
I first seen Broomfiller perform a few Years ago & it was a beautiful taste to these hardcore but tasteful melodic ears.
Still to this day, on almost every indie link out there on the internet, Broomfiller has tucked their name on every page, & for that persistance , making them a good example of what it takes to play in one of the worlds most elite games...

(INTERVIEW : JULY 14th 2002)

INDIERAGE : What is your home town (Toronto) music scene like right now ?
RICHARD : come ci come ca. the people who are into us, come regularly, but i find that alot of people just don't 'go out' to hear new music / bands. i don't think there's enought 'indie' support.

INDIERAGE : What is it about the Broomfiller sound that makes you different from those around you ?
RICHARD : not sure,...but we've never followed trends, either visually or sonically. I listen to a good variety of music, but just write what feels natural. it seems sort of cliché to say that,..but it's true. People come up to me and ask me what my influences are,..and before i answer, they blurb out 4- or 5 bands that they think we sound like. The majority of these bands i've never heard of before,...or have heard of,..but never heard their music before. so, to make a long story even longer,...i have absolutely no clue.

INDIERAGE : What seems to be your most popular song ? The song most requested live ?
RICHARD : 'Decide Inside' is very popular for us on radio (both internet and airwave), and it does quite well for us on mp3.com as well. the most request live song would have to be Decide Inside and Take the Picture - (both on our newly released full length album "Watching the girls go bi")

INDIERAGE : Do you guys work day jobs or is this your main focus right now ?
RICHARD : Brandon (drummer) has his own recording studio, George (bass) has his own business and I work in the film industry, directing and editing music videos for bands, as well as write, produce and edit short slapstick comedy films.

INDIERAGE : Has anything come about from out side Canada ? Any parts of the world who have picked up on you.
RICHARD : yes. lots of interest in the U.S. as well as in the U.K. we have several radio stations and zines that have reviewed us, play our music, and still follow what we're doing.

INDIERAGE : If there is 1 thing you want your fans to know about you, what is it ?
RICHARD : as an indie band,...we love it when we see (at the very least) someone knodding their head while we play. just to know that our audience has a pulse,...is enough to make us put on the absolute best show you've seen. we will anyways,..but just seeing that little bit of momentum from our music in their bodies,...is a real thrill. when there's a massive pit happening,..then we're jumping around like animals. it's all good.

INDIERAGE : what are the plans for the band right now (touring, video, time off etc.)
RICHARD : we head out on a 40 date Canada / U.S. tour to support our new album. we leave July 15th, and will be back at the end of August. this is the first leg of our tour,...we'll be heading out east for the 2nd leg in November.
(Editor's Note : Broom Filler just recently signed with Sterile Records)

INDIERAGE : What seems to be the bands biggest disagreement ?
RICHARD : we always disagree on agreeing who has the least amount of money.

INDIERAGED : What is the one thing the whole band always agrees on ?
RICHARD : hot chicks with big tits.
(INDIE RAGE NOTE : finally some truly honest answers !, thats what we like to hear )
INDIERAGE : We know the radio & TV dictates what the average Joe listens
to, but what are your personal favourite listens ? Please be honest. BROOMFILLER : George - U2, The Police, Sting
Brandon - Melvins, Tool, Glueleg
Richard - Deftones, Face to Face, Foo Fighters
INDIERAGE : Are you a supporter of Sites like MP3.com ? Do you think they are >valuable or just a neccassary evil. ?
RICHARD : I think that sites like that are good in the aspect that it'll get you exposure that you've never had. if someone is interested in you enough from that mp3 site,..you should have your product available somehow,..so they can purchase it off of you. overall, i think those websites are a good way of introducing your music to potential new fans.

INDIERAGE : What do you guys think about the Much Music Video awards ? To the world, they must think Canada has only 5 bands. What do you have to say ?
RICHARD : When we finally get on the MMVA,...things will change....forever...

INDIERAGE : What is the biggest sham you ever recieved by the music industry ?
RICHARD : yeah i have 1 serious DON'T

- DON'T EVER play a show put on by a guy named TEX. this guy, Tex, has his "Tex's Smokehaus" which is actually a shanty town barn,...he claims to have a great Canadian music festival every week or so,...but i'm telling you,...we got invited to play,...we drove an hour to get there,..and there was nobody there, the so called venue (a barn with holes on all 4 walls big enought to kick a basketball thru) was full of junk and farm equipment. we knocked on his house,..and he answered the door all pissed drunk,...

several bands drove looooong ways to get to his disaster of a show,...and he didn't have the deceny to post the cancellation on his website,...

he is a waste of any musicians good time.
DON'T play at Tex's Smokehaus.
