Personally, I have watched these boys (in other bands) develop over the last 8 years in the Windsor Ontario Area.. There really has not been a BIG Death/Metal scene where they are from, but Neighbouring DETROIT U.S.A. has kept it in line.
1 year in the Making , Chatham Ontario boys Pit Bull Grin have the musician history to back the slap that they promise. I was never a big fan of their previous efforts 'Gates Of Rage' simply because it does take many years to be the best in that genre. But...PIT Bull Grin have delt a fine slice of Hard Core with their latest song " Big Bad Nothing" Focused, Aggressive, Mature, to the point & finally ready to deserve your ear.
Guitarist Houlio takes the time to let you know how they worked their way up to becoming a true promise in the land of the free.
INDIERAGE : What is your hometown music scene like right now?
PITBULLGRIN :As of right now we haven’t played in our hometown of Chatham yet. We have been concentrating on the larger markets around us like Windsor, London, and Toronto.
We would like to head over to Detroit and play there but there is too much red tape to go through since Sept. 11, so we will have to dominate the Metal scene in Canada for the time being.
As for the scene’s, in Windsor there is a fairly large but very unpredictable scene there. You never know if there will be 20 people there or 200. We are fairly new to London and Toronto, but we haven’t been disappointed when we played there to say the least.
INDIERAGE :What is it about your bands sound that makes you different from those
around you?
PBG : We kill the audience; our sound is like a giant wall of pure death that just devours every person in the crowd. If you are in the venue when we are on stage, your eyes and ears are glued to our entire performance. The people cannot help themselves; they can’t take their eyes off of us. It helps to have a front man like Darren also, he is a monster, and lets everyone know it when we are on stage. Can you imagine a 300 pound, giant, looking like a killer dude, screaming and putting the fear of god in you! That’s what it is like when you see Pit Bull Grin!
INDIERAGE :What seems to be your most popular song?
PBG :Scab seems to be a favorite. It’s hard to say though cause people who see us really aren’t that familiar with us right know. I’ll be able to answer that question a bit better after our cd is out this fall.
INDIERAGE : Do you guys work day jobs or is this your main focus right now?
PBG : No we all work! Some of us have wives and children to feed. But or goal is to make music our main source of income.
INDIERAGE : If there is 1 thing you want your fans to know about you, what is it?
PBG : That we are the most Deadly band in Canada!!!!!
INDIERAGE : What is the bands biggest disagreement & the biggest agreement ?
PBG : Disagreement -We haven’t really had one yet! The odd riff during the writing process and that’s about it. I’m sure something will come up! It always does!
Agreement : Being totally brutal and keeping each song familiar but always a little different.
INDIERAGE : We know the radio & TV dictates what the average Joe listens
to, but what are your personal favorite listens? Please be honest.
PBG : Personally, I like Old school metal, Metallica, Anthrax, etc.
A few new bands like Slipknot and Disturbed.
The other guys are listening to Messugah, Dillinger Escape Plan, Tool, Dog Fashion disco, System of a Down, Ozzy and Black Sabbath, and anything with Mike Patton in it.
INDIERAGE : Who does your booking & how to you get most of your shows?
PBG : I do all the booking at the moment. I talk to the owner of the club, or talk to other bands to bring us up to bars that they play at, and then after we play, I talk to the owner and get another show for us. It’s really easy at the moment to book a heavy band. It’s almost scary in a way.
INDIERAGE : What do you guys think about the Much Music Video awards ? To the world, they must think Canada has only 5 bands. What do you have to say ?
PBG : Much Music has this new station called loud! It SUCKS, nothing on it is heavy. I can see playing Korn and Nickleback, but they play Bif Naked and other shit!!!! I haven’t seen any Slayer or anything even remotely heavy. So I think the Much Music Video awards suck. It’s just another stupid award from stupid V.J’s you don’t wanna get me started on that!!!!!
INDIERAGE : What is the biggest sham you ever received by the music industry ?
Anything that can help warn other bands.
PBG : My old band played the Milwaukee Metal fest about 5 years ago. We had to sell $1500 US worth of tickets to play. We get there and find out we are playing at 12:30 in the afternoon. There was no one their. We played for maybe 50 people in a room that held 2500. Plus the sound sucked! We drove 11 hours, and paid $1500 us to play for 20 minuets. There is something wrong with that.
A little advice to any band out there!!! NEVER PAY TO PLAY! PLAY TO GET PAID!
