![]() | This is Lao Zi. He is the ancient Chinese philosopher usually
considered the founder of the Daoist school of thought.
Laozi worked as a librarian for the state of Zhou. Legend has it that
when he retired, he journeyed to the west of China
riding on a water buffalo. Before leaving, he wrote a short book which later came to be known as the DaoDeJing. In the Daoists view of the world, things only exists as contrasts. Up and down, beauty and ugliness, do not exist separately but as contrasts. The Daoist also speak of the Dao which has no definition or description. The character for Dao can mean pathway. The where and when the universe exists in is the Dao, but there is no where and when without the existence of the universe. Thus the Dao is utterly undefinable. |
