Dangerous Compositions |
DANGEROUS MIXES |
- Barium and strontium nitrates with potassium chlorate and shellac or other gums produces an extremely sensitive mixture. Sensitivity is enhanced with the addition of charcoal. - Barium chlorate should be handled with care, and if a mixture also contains shellac and other hydrocarbon sources or gums great care is warranted. - Aluminium powder in mixtures with either potassium chlorate, barium nitrate, shellac or other carbon sources is considered dangerous. - Potassium dichromate and potassium permanganate in mixtures makes them very sensitive, particularly in the presence of metals. - Compositions containing both potassium chlorate and red phosphorous should NEVER be mixed except in the presence of enough water to make sure that no dry material is present. - Combinations of picric acid and potassium chlorate should be avoided, as they are extraordinarily sensitive and not safe for use. - Compositions containing potassium chlorate, sulphur, and any sulfide or sulphate are considered extremely unstable and dangerous mixes. - Combinations of ammonium salts and chlorates are very unstable and likely to combust at any time. |
