Leaders Educate the Community
By Che Ankham
Peer Health Education (PHE) is a San
Jose State University Recognized Student Organization, affiliated with the
Student Health Center under the Division of Student Affairs. It is comprised of
four tracks: Track I, Gender and Sexual Health; Track II, CPR and First Aid;
Track III, Healthy Lifestyles and Stress Management; and Track IV, Ethnic and
Cultural Health.
Volunteer and paid student interns
are trained to teach about their respective health topics. They reach out to the
campus and community via in-class presentations, tabling events, and health
fairs. Some of their past events include: Breast Cancer Awareness Month, World
AIDS Day, American Red Cross Blood Drives, Great American Smoke-out, and the
Berryessa Health Fair. During the 2003-2004 academic year, PHE served over 2500
students, staff, and community members.
Peer Educators have also been members
of other service organizations, including AmeriCorps and Alpha Phi Omega. Among
their ranks include: Theodore Paat, Phi Tran, Michelle Lozada, Vashti Sinigayan,
Daphne Purisima, and Che Angkham.
PHE’s partner peer programs include
Prevention Education Program (PEP), which educates about alcohol and drug abuse
prevention, and the Nutrition Education Action Team (NEAT), which provides
information about healthy eating. All services are free of charge to SJSU
faculty and students with the exception of CPR/First Aid classes and items sold
by the Condom Co-op, which is operated by Track I. Students can, however,
receive four free condoms per visit per day with a valid Tower ID.
PHE is located in SJSU’S Health
Building in room 209. You may contact Che Angkham or Vanae Tran at 408.924.6204,
or Elgrie Hurd or Karis Bituin at 408.924.6143 for more information.
