Kenneth Cheung's Alpha Phi Omega Universe
A Call To Arms
By Che Ankham
On October 20th and 21st,
SJSU was seeing red! No, it was not over the Bush or Kerry campaigning; it was
an American Red Cross Blood Drive, co-sponsored by Peer Health Education (PHE),
Alpha Phi Omega (APhiO), Pre-Med Club, Lambda Theta Alpha, Kappa Sigma, and the
InterFraternal Council.
Preparation for the event began in
mid September with meetings facilitated by Cynthia Carlson (American Red Cross
Blood Services) and Che Angkham (PHE/APhiO). Delegates from the different
organizations met to discuss advertisement and volunteer sign-ups.
For the two weeks leading up to the
blood drive, volunteers tabled at the Student Union to promote the event and to
register donors online. During the actual blood drive, volunteers worked as
Greeters, Buddy the Blood Drop, Buddy’s Escort, and Canteen Operators. Over 50
volunteers logged in approx. 175 hours.
The October blood drive was a
phenomenal success!! The goal was exceeded by at least 10 pints each day,
bringing in a total of 155 pints. In fact, donors were turned away due to
limited capacity.
Upcoming SJSU Blood
Drives are on November 10th and December 3rd. For more
information, please contact Cynthia Carlson at 510.773.2401 or visit www.beadonor.com.
