ABOUT THE EDITOR: Professor Emmanuel Gladstone Olawale Rotimi, one of contemporary Africa's leading Playwrights and Theatre Directors was born on April 13, 1938. He obtained the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Boston University and Master of Fine Arts from the prestigious Yale University Drama School where he earned the distinction of being a Rockefeller Foundation Scholar in Playwriting and Dramatic Literature. He was for over two decades, Professor of Playwriting, Dramatic Literature and Directing. He founded the Department of Dramatic Arts, University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1977. He was also the founder and Artistic Director of three theatres and had a passion for directing off Proscenium. Ola Rotimi had variously been visiting Professor as well as Playwright/Director in Europe and The United States. He was twice commissioned by the British Broadcasting Corporation to write plays for its Overseas Broadcast. He died on the 18th of August, 2000 having returned home to the Department of Dramatic Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife to carry out what he considered the final thrust of his life's creative and academic work. |
