Who
are these two men?
At first glance
it appears to be President Bill Clinton and Vice-President Al Gore, but
look again! It is really Clinton and Clinton. Examine the faces
on both men -- they are absolutely identical, only the hairline and clothing
is different.
So What's Going On?
In this particular image
you were most likely fooled, if you were fooled, by its context. When your
visual system looks at an image it is not so much concerned with the specific
details as determining the overall meaning of the image. In this particular
case, you are most likely used to such a pose with the Vice-President in
the rear. Al Gore's familiar suit and hairline also contributed to the
effect.
This illusion is due
to MIT's vision scientist Dr. Pawan Sinha. This web site erroneously attributed
this illusion previously to Dr. Ron Rensink, but he had nothing to do with
it. We sincerely apologize to Dr. Sinha for any misunderstanding that this
caused.
