and at the same time have draconic punishments for those breeding possums here... Create a consciousness about the ecological value of supporting the eradication of opossums in New Zealand. This is by definition a limited product, therefore prices must rise.
Imagine the price of the very last possum-furs from New Zealand... auctioned!

Wiping out opossums

Wobbly opossums, opossums with their skins off, wreckers of our native forests, spreaders of disease in national cattle and deer herds, secret eaters of rare native birds' eggs and hatchlings -- the furry little sods have  been much in the news of late.
Rightly so, too. For years there has been a growing concern that these pesky Tasmanian imports are doing irreparable damage to a whole raft of things in our country.
Grudgingly, successive governments have begun to do something about it, though don't be fooled by the recent budget announcement that an extra $10  million off is to be spend by the Department of Conservation on opossum control over the next three years: the Department gets no more money. It's simply been told not to spend $10 million on other urgent projects.
Still, if that $10 million is spent on additional opossum control, it will certainly be a step, albeit small, in the right direction. The department could probably use $25 million each year for the next decade to get the problem properly under control.

Dead opossums don't eat trees, nor do they breed, and any additional money spent in knocking them off, whether with one 1080 poison, cyanide, trapping or shooting, is money well spent.

At a recent pest destruction conference at Tokaanu, the decision to run side-by-side trials using  1080 poison on one block and ground hunters on an adjacent area was announced.

Good  scheme. It will lay a few ghosts; but more importantly it will knock off a bunch of opossums that up to now have been gnawing ever bigger holes in the bush. Every dead 'un is a good 'un.

And just maybe it will be shown that the two methods can be used together; ground hunters would skim off the better furs at their own expense, and then the airborne poison can clobber the remainder.
Possum Products Marketing Group spokesman Neil Allan, of Opotiki, is a long-time proponent of both the first trade and the idea of professional hunters working closely the Department of Conservation, regional councils and private land owners to control the pests.

Maybe at least a little cohesion is being brought to bear on the battle with a plague that is literally eating our bush at the rate of 20,000 tons a night.
