A note from the "designer"
I want to seize the opportunity to mention
that I, as a beginner in image processing, would have never been
able to scan all these pictures and obtain decent results within
a reasonable amount of time had I not hit, by pure luck, on the
best scanning site on the Web:

I feel greatly indebted to Wayne for having conveyed the know-how
to me in an easily understandable fashion. I looked at other sources
of information (he has very many helpful links) and to my great
surprise, they only brought me additional information in very
specialized areas...
If ever you need to scan, this is the site. I also advise you
to look at it before buying a scanner.
I have a bit more experience in photographying art and will in the near future add a link to a few hints in the area.
