Of course it hurts...

Of course it hurts for buds to burst
why else would spring so hesitate!
So safe inside the scales in shelter of the stem!
So eager now to break it all and to go to see the world!

Of course it hurts the drop of water
when it has to break it skin and fall!
It used to cling so tight to branches of the tree
and now it has to leave and fall alone in empty space

Of course it hurts the acre when the plow
is making deep furrows in its unused earth
preparing it to take the coming grains to grow
and letting it be fertilized and softened smooth.

Of course it hurts the acre when at first
the seeds of grains are coming up
penetrating into the sun warmed surface
and growing quickly to be long and wide.

Of course it hurts our hearts when you and me
so beautifully sudden will become a we!
Old and well known patterns must be broken
and new furrows in the resting acres will be token.
