Maltese Writer Chosen for Big Torino 2000
Writer Bernard Micallef will be representing Inizjamed (Malta) at Big Torino 2000, the first edition of the International Biennial of Young Creativity held in Turin, Italy. He will be joining some 500 artists from 35 European countries and from China, guest country at this first edition, chosen by Big Torino's 'artistic committee' made up of 15 European experts in their respective fields.
The curators of the 'Writing' section, writers Paolo Repetti and Emanuele Trevi, were impressed by Bernard Micallef's short story, "An Injury in the Village", and decided to include him in a select group of nine writers from the UK, Finland, Germany, Italy, France, and China, who will be taking part in this major artistic event. (
http://www.bigtorino.net/scrittura.htm)Micallef's story was originally written in Maltese and read out beautifully by actress Marcelle Teuma during the literary evening, Proíett Bla Millennju held as part of the Evenings on Campus cultural festival of 1998. Micallef has also been asked to write a short comment about his story and an essay with the title: "Where do stories come from?"
Bernard Micallef is an assistant lecturer in Maltese at the Í.F Abela Junior College and the Faculty of Arts of the University of Malta. He has written a number of critical works, including a book on the poetry of Achille Mizzi (1996), and a collection of short stories, Il-Hajt ta' Malta u Stejjer Ohra (1988) and a novel, Misteri Maghzula mill-Hajja ta' Halliem (1995). At present he is doing research for a doctoral thesis on the interpretation of Maltese modernist poetry.
Bernard Micallef's participation in Big Torino 2000 has been made possible by Inizjamed, a local mediterranean cultural initiative founded in 1998 to promote a more socially and politically committed culture. The Parliamentary Secretariat in the Ministry of Education has supported Micallef's participation through its Youth Support Programme.
