| I heard my brothers call... distant, from the grave... it called like the long roll... summoning us to a place and time we had nearly forgotten... We will not turn away... Was it really so long ago? I will be as faithful in death as he was in life and I will remember... not because someone told me that I should, but because I could be no other way and he would do this for me. | One hundred and fourty some years ago, our Childers/Childress forefathers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| heard the the call to defend their homeland. Hundreds of our | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| family answered the call, as they | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| have in every war since the founding of our nation. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Yet, this was a different war. A war not against a | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| foreign invader, or to defend the freedoms of another nation. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This was a war of brother against brother, north fighting south. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It has many names, the war of the rebellion, the war for southern independence | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| the war against northern aggression, or the most common the Civil War. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| More American's would die in this war that any other war, before or since. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Every family across our nation would be affected, our's was one of them. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
