Russian column attacked near Galashki
The Chechen command today confirmed that near the Ingush village of
Galashki a Russian military convoy was attacked. The Chechen side does not
specify which [Chechen] units participated in the operation. According to
information from Kavkaz Center*s correspondent fighters of the southwestern
front of the Chechen Armed Forces and a group of Caucasian volunteers took
part in the operation.
According to the Chechen side in the clash three Russian heavy trucks and
two BTR were destroyed, while not less than 40 Russian soldiers were
killed.
Fighting Near Mount Surokh-Lam
The commander of the northwestern section of the Chechen Armed Forces,
Bakuyev Baudin, said today bitter fighting was taking place in the Sharoy
and Cheberloy Districts of the ChRI.
Mobile units of the Chechen fighters carried out a special operation
against so-called spetsnaz units of the Russians in the region of Mount
Surokh-Lam. A hostile unit of up to 250 men was located on the western
slopes of the mountain. A scouting unit of the mujahideen that had traced
out the enemy*s route engaged in fighting with the aggressors. The unequal
fighting continued for two hours, until the main forces of the mujahideen
approached. The mujahideen units attacked the enemy from two sides; the
Russians called for helicopter support. Fierce fighting lasted for about
three hours. The aggressors retreated under cover of helicopters.
According to Bakuyev Baudin, no fewer than 25 Russians were killed, and
enemy materiel was seized. The mujahideen lost four men, while 14 Chechen
fighters were wounded.
Last night the mujahideen carried out a raid on the Russians* base near the
village of Dai. The Chechens used unguided S-5 rockets. A total of 22
projectiles were launched upon the enemy.
Information Bureaus in the Ukraine and in Belarus
The Ukrainian patriotic organization UNA-UNSO announces the extension of
the number of its informational representations in Ukraine and in Belarus.
Information centres to support Ichkeria already exist in Odesa, Kyiv,
L*viv, and in Rivne. Additional centres in the immediate future will be
open in Sevastopol* and in Minsk.
UNA-UNSO considers the Russian onslaught on Chechnya as a classical
aggression against an independent state. Russia is also regarded as the
greatest threat to Ukrainian independence. In this relation, the incidents
in Chechnya to UNA-UNSO are a possibility to call the Ukrainian and the
international public*s attention to the real intentions of the Kremlin.
Last Month 120 Dagestanis joined the Chechen Mujahideen
This was announced by the prime-minister of the Islamic Leadership of
Dagestan Sirazhudin Ramazanov. According to him, about 150 Dagestanis have
so far fallen during the fights with the Russian aggressors. The Dagestani
mujahideen are fighting within the Chechen Armed Forces or in the Islamic
Peacekeeping Forces.
Ramazanov confirmed that he has taken part in the commanders* meeting that
passed a resolution to extend the combat activities across the whole North
Caucasus if the Russians do not begin to retreat from Chechnya by the end
of this month.
Ramazanov also spoke about armed clashes of mobile units of the Dagestani
mujahideen with Russian units near Lake Kazenoy-Am on the Dagestani-Chechen
frontier. According to him, the Dagestani unit accomplished its mission.
One Russian BTR transporting materiel was knocked out. The Dagestanis lost

Kavkaz Center reports:
Minor Incidents on May 9th
As announced by the Chechen command, May 9th passed away in relative
tranquillity. Between dawn and sunset the mujahideen did not engage in
active fighting.
The aggressors, for their part, tried to escalate the situation in the
districts of Vedeno, Nozhay-Yurt, Shatoy, and Kurchaloy several times.
Armoured columns of the enemy entered various villages of Chechnya. In
several cases Russian tanks and BMPs destroyed civilian houses under the
pretext that the villages concerned had accommodated mujahideen. In the
village of Dargo four houses were demolished by direct tank fire. In Borzoy
three houses were destroyed, and the mosque was damaged.
In Bachi-Yurt (Kurchaloy District) Russian BTRs passing through the village
opened machine gun fire at random Four people were killed, among them two
elderly women.
Chechen Raid Near Novogrozny
According to the staff of the ministry of the interior of the ChRI, at
about midnight during the night from May 9th to May 10th, a special unit of
the Chechen mujahideen attacked a Russian post on the Aleroy Range near the
settlement of Novogrozny. After having applied unguided S-5 rockets, the
mujahideen entered the post and engaged in face-to-face combat with the
enemy. Fighting lasted for about one hour. The Russian post was
annihilated. 34 Russians were killed, and 7 armoured vehicles were
destroyed.
The Chechen ministry of the interior reports four mujahideen killed. Their
bodies were recovered from the place of fighting.
For the rest of the night the Russians intensively shelled the Aleroy Range
with artillery and mortars. Shelling continued after dawn. Russian aviation
is bombing the woods extending over the Aleroy Range without letup.

Kavkaz Center reports:
Aslan Maskhadov Suggests Negotiations
The President of the ChRI Aslan Maskhadov, in an interview with AFP, said
that a plan for the regulation of the military conflict and the beginning
of Chechen-Russian negotiations has been transmitted to Moscow.
Aslan Maskhadov suggests ceasing combat activities from May 30th and
beginning immediate negotiations without any preconditions and through the
intermediary of a third party.
Hostile Unit Destroyed Near Vashtar River
In the region of the Vashtar River, 3 km from the village of Ulus-Kert, a
so-called spetsnaz unit of the Russian aggressors was destroyed. A Chechen
subunit has been shadowing this unit*s movement for five days.
The occupational forces are trying to change their tactics, making use of
mobile scouting units. According to Chechen commanders, the aggressors are
aspiring to copy the mujahideens* activities. But the weakness of the
aggressors in this regard is a result of the great strength of the Russian
units that are engaged and the fact that these units are supported by
helicopters. This significantly weakens the efficiency of the Russian
efforts.
The Chechens encircled and virtually wiped out the Russian unit consisting
of about 200 men.
Making the best use of the terrain, the mujahideen killed more than 40
Russians without suffering any casualties themselves. After three hours of
bitter shooting the aggressors retreated in disorderly fashion in the
direction of Duba-Yurt. The helicopter support remained useless for the
Russians because of the thick forest along the Vashtar River.
Military Majlis of the Chechen Mujahideen Pass a Resolution
The Military Majlis (Commanders* Council) met yesterday in one of the
mountain districts of the ChRI. All Chechen commanders took part in this
majlis, among them also the amirs of Caucasian volunteer units and of the
mujahideen of the Islamic Peacekeeping Army.
In this meeting, a resolution related to the Kremlin regime*s ongoing
efforts to extinguish the Muslims of the Caucasus was passed. In this
resolution it is suggested to Putin, the leader of the Kremlin regime, to
cease combat activities on the territory of the ChRI and to start the real
withdrawal of the occupational forces until the end of this month. In case
of refusal, the mujahideen will declare the entire North Caucasus a combat
zone and will start to destroy the aggressors throughout the entire
Caucasus.
Shamil Basayev, speaking to Kavkaz Center*s correspondent, confirmed that
this resolution has been passed. -We are going to declare Jihad across the
whole Caucasus; everywhere where the Russian aggressors are.- According to
Basayev, Putin is entirely disorientated about the real situation in
Chechnya. -The Russian generals are confounding their wishes and reality,-
says Shamil Basayev.
Mujahideen Will Interrupt Fighting on May 9th
Shamil Basayev said that the mujahideen would interrupt combat activities
on May 9th for 24 hours.
Basayev associated this decision with the fact that May 9th was a holiday
for all who fought against militant nationalism, i.e., against fascism. He
says he was greeting the veterans of World War II who saved the world from
the anti-human ideology of fascism. Today the mujahideen are fighting
against another threat to mankind-against Russianism. With the help of the
Almighty, the Chechen mujahideen will resist this threat and will save the
world from the Russianist plague. Many people don*t realize this yet; but
time will come when the people of the world will return their thanks to the
Chechen mujahideen, emphasized Basayev.
Saydayev Repudiates Russian Propaganda
According to Mumadi Saydayev (Head of the Defence Staff of the Chechen
government), the Russian reports about the -daily annihilation of Chechen
fighters- are nothing but a bluff. Saydayev says that since the battle in
Saadi-Khutor the Chechens have suffered almost no casualties. In five
large-scale special operations against the Russians, the mujahideen lost 6
men, while 13 were wounded. All these so-called ambushes by the Russians,
uncovered weapons caches, surrender of fighters, and dozens of mujahideen
killed are complete lies and disinformation. Quite on the contrary, the
Russian casualties are still increasing significantly: Every day the
Russians are losing an average of 300 men and 15 vehicles, says Saydayev.
