The command of the Central Front of the Chechen Armed
Forces reports local fighting in the southeast of the
country.
The Russian troops are being concentrated in several
villages of the Vedeno and the Nozhay-Yurt Districts.
The enemy's aviation is carrying out attacks on the
mountain and foothill villages without letup.
Kavkaz Center's correspondent at the staff of the
central front reports skirmishes near the heights of
Turti-Khutor and near the villages of Sayasan and
Tazen-Kala. Subunits of the mujahideen attacked the
enemy and inflicted losses on them. The mujahideen
annihilated an advance unit of the Russians, knocking
out 4 armoured vehicles and killing up to 25 Russian
soldiers. Afterwards the Russians retreated to the
village of Sayasan.
Chechen mortar crews, deployed on tactical heights,
carried out massive attacks on Russian crowds. About
30 so-called paratroopers were killed, and 3 BTRs were
destroyed.
Near Tazen-Kala, Chechen fighters annihilated a
Russian assault unit. Fighting lasted for two hours.
The mujahideen used unguided reactive grenades and
automatic grenade launchers. Three armoured vehicles
were knocked out, and 15 Russians were killed.
In the last 24 hours the mujahideen did not loose one
single fighter. Seven soldiers of the interior forces
of the ChRI were wounded.
In the staff of the central front the Russian
operations are considered spontaneous and chaotic. The
Russian are haphazardly firing upon mountain slopes,
woods, and villages.
Shamil Basayev on Russian reports
Shamil Basayev considers all Russian declarations
about a so-called large-scale operation in the
southwest of Chechnya a complete bluff and a
self-deception.
Mr. Basayev, commanding the central front of the
Chechen Armed Forces, says a scale terrorist operation
against the Chechen people and the Chechen state has
been going on since nine months. The Russianists
blitzkrieg ["blitskrig rusistov", transl.] has failed
completely. Thus the Russians are force to proclaim
periodically "new stages" of the military operations
and "new tactics" of their criminal formations.
Actually the Russian generals are terrorizing the
civilian population, while the mujahideen slowly but
surely are inflicting a catastrophe on the Russian
army.
According to Shamil Basayev, fighting with several
Russian so-called para units in the Nozhay-Yurt
District has resulted in the destruction of these
units. He repudiates Kremlin reports on Chechen
casualties.
These reports are false, but on the other hand are
calming the mujahideen since they give evidence of the
complete disorientation of the enemy. The situation is
developing well, says Mr. Basayev: "In recent fighting
in Dzhokhar and in other districts of the ChRI we lost
only one fighter, and several fighters were slightly
wounded. Let them deceive themselves by saying they
control situation."
As an example for the lies of the Kremlin
propagandists, Shamil Basayev mentions Yastrshembsky's
statement that "the Arab field commander Abu Hamza had
a Chechen fighter punished for his refusal to take up
position." Yastrshembsky obviously does not know what
he is talking about, for Abu Hamza is a Chechen - as
is the overwhelming majority of the other commanders,
says Mr. Basayev.
Mr. Basayev furthermore repudiates all Kremlin reports
about disagreements within the leadership of the ChRI.
Kvashin's New Tactics
In the morning of May 30 a Russian armoured column
moving from Vedeno to the northwest shelled the
Chechen villages of Eshelkhatoy and Elistanzhi with
120-calibre mortars. The Russian armoured vehicles as
well strafed roads and forests near these villages.
Their motivation remains unknown because there were no
mujahideen in this region.
In Elistanzhi a pregnant woman and three little girls
were killed by an exploding mortar grenade, while in
Eshelkhatoy four women and two elderly people died. 17
people were wounded.
Four Armoured Vehicles destroyed
In Urus-Martan the Chechen mujahideen destroyed two
Russian BTRs with radio-controlled mines. Virtually
all crew members were wounded. Afterwards the Chechens
opened fire with automatic weapons. Shooting lasted
for 15 minutes; 6 Russians were killed. The mujahideen
suffered no casualties.
Between the villages of Avtury and Kurchaloy two
Russian BMPs and one Ural ammo truck with were blown
up. Seven Russian were killed. According to local
people, the ammunition was burning and subsequently
exploding for several hours and hindered other Russian
troops to approach to their wounded comrades.

Kavkaz Center reports:
Central Front
According to Kavkaz Center's correspondent at the
staff of the central front, yesterday evening near
Zhanni-Vedeno two Russian BTRs were blown up with
radio-controlled mines. Four Russians were killed.
At the same time, subunits of the Chechen Armed Forces
are continuing to exercise control of the tactically
important height Gezgin-Lam. The Russians until now
did not make serious efforts to move in this
direction. The enemy uses artillery and aviation, and
is shelling Mount Gezgin Lam without letup.
This morning, a large mass of Russian troops was
perceived 2 km north of the village of Belgatoy. The
inhabitants, being afraid of Russian shelling, fled
the village. Russian aircrafts are reported to strafe
the refugees. At least nine people were killed.
Near Turti-Khutor a mujahideen unit attacked and
destroyed a group of aggressors. Three BTRs and two
heavy trucks were fired on with grenade launchers. In
the course of fighting, two BTRs and two trucks were
set on fire. Ten Russians were killed. The other
Russians fled with the remaining BTR towards the
village of Sayasan. One mujahid was killed in this
raid, while four men were wounded.
In Dzhokhar,
Chechen special units continue to be active in the
Chechen capital. Last night the mujahideen attacked a
checkpoint and deployment places of the Russians in
the Zavodsky and in the Oktyabrsky Districts of
Dzhokhar.
The most intense shooting occurred in the industrial
zone of the town near the Anisimov petroleum works and
in the Chernoreche settlement, where Chechen fighters
now have been active for four days.
In the attacks the mujahideen used light mortars,
grenade launchers and flamethrowers. On the territory
of the Anisimov works a BTR was knocked out. In
Chernoreche a group of Russian soldiers who tried to
build up an ambush for the Chechen fighters was shot.
Near Minutka Square the mujahideen fired upon a
Russian checkpoint with grenade launchers. According
to certain reports, two Russians were killed.
In the Michurina settlement a Russian BMP and a GAZ-66
vehicle were destroyed with a booby-trap. Chechen
fighters reported three Russians killed.
During the night combat two mujahideen were wounded.
There were no Chechen casualties.

Kavkaz Center reports:
Russian Local Headquarters in Chernoreche Destroyed
According to the Chechen command, yesterday evening at
6:30 p.m. local time (14:30 GMT) the Chechen
mujahideen attacked the local headquarters in the
Chernoreche settlement.
Two mobile units under the command of Abu-Shamil and
Abu-Hamza carried out the operation. These units
belong to Ramazan Akhmadov's Islamic brigade "Jamaat".
The enemy was fired upon from two sides with mortars,
automatic grenade launchers, and machine guns.
The Chechen commanders reported that the attack was so
fierce and unexpected for the Russians that the
enemies virtually did not even defend themselves.
During one hour of fighting more than 40 Russians were
killed. The mujahideen entered the headquarters and
captured a great amount of materiel. After the attack
the mujahideen retreated to their bases in the
outskirts of Dzhokhar.
At about 9 p.m. local time the Russians opened massive
mortar and artillery fire on the dwelling quarters of
the settlements of Chernoreche and Aldi. Shelling
lasted the whole night.
It is well known that the Russians committed
abominable crimes in Aldi last winter and shot 115
civilians there.
