PALESTINIAN PRISONERS IN ZIONIST JAILS CONTINUE HUNGER STRIKE

Occupied Jerusalem: Hundreds of Palestinian political prisoners in Zionist prisons are continuing an open-ended hunger-strike to protest the deterioration of their dismal imprisonment conditions and demand an end to Israeli mistreatment of them.

Palestinian sources said the vast majority of the prisoners have joined the five-day old strike which they vowed won*t end until the Israeli government terminates its persecution of the prisoners.

The prisoners are particularly demanding that prison authorities put an end to solitary confinement, denials of family visits, flagrant transfer of prisoners, as well as the numerous forms of humiliations and mistreatment meted out to the prisoners.

Moreover, the prisoners demand that genuine medical care be provided for the ill among them. This latest demand is particularly important since the Israeli prison authorities reportedly treat all sorts of ailments among prisoners with analgesics.

Meanwhile, solidarity with the prisoners* strike is continuing all over the occupied territories.

Today, marches and rallies took place in may parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, calling on the Palestinian leadership to exert pressure on the Israeli government to release the prisoners.

Israel and the PA reached an agreement more than four years ago whereby Israel agreed to release all Palestinian prisoners before the commencement of the final status talks. However, Israel reneged on the agreement.

There are as many as 1700 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails today, two thirds of them are affiliated with the Islamic movements, particularly Hamas.
