Greetings around the world! What a wonderful and exciting adventure placed ahead of Daniel and I. We are excited about planting churches in the Big Apple. We plan to establish a non profit organization where we can meet people by providing food, clothing, and life skills classes.
I grew up in Long Island, about 45 miles from the city. While in New York, I was blessed to be mentored and strengthened in Christ at Nesconset Church of Christ. While attending Nesconset Church of Christ, I enjoyed teaching Wednesday night Bible classes, leading pre-schoolers in songs and Bible stories, and working with preteens on the weekends. Although we made several trips to the City, I have never seen the city in such a way that I saw it during spring break of 2002. Living with the people in the Bronx, visiting teachers in the schools, and walking around the projects made me want to go back and experience God in a new way. I have been on several mission trips to Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Philippines, and several states in America, never have I been so excited about a long term mission project until I got back to Lubbock after spring break.
So what makes the Big Apple different from all the other places? Have you ever walked down the streets and see thousands after thousands of people have a blank stare on their face? Have you ever seen three "church buildings" one block after the next boarded up? Have you ever sat down and talked to someone about their day, what their desires are. In many countries people love you because you're an American. In New York City people love you because you care for them.
My goal here is not to win New York for Christ but to share Christ. Our job as Christians is to find the lost, God's job is to save them. God doesn't need missionaries, church planters, or ministers. God could save the world right now, God wants us to seek the lost and be his sons and daughters so we can rely more on Him and grow in a deeper relationship with Him.
