chapter one: the lake

"Ebony!" Ebony, come on, wake up!"
Ebony opened her eyes slowly to see her little brother staring down at her. Ebony groaned quietly, and glanced at the clock on her bedside cabinet. It read '6:32AM'.
"Jack..." she murmered, "It's too early, go back to bed."
"But you promised we'd go to the lake today!" Jack squealed.
"Yeah, at some reasonable hour!" Ebony growled, and rolled over in her bed so her head was facing the pillow and not her brother.
"But I want to go now!" Jack said, shaking Ebony by her shoulders.
"Alright, alright!" Ebony gave in, and rolled back over, "Go and get dressed and have some breakfast. I'll meet you in the kitchen in half an hour."
"Yay!" Jack cheered loudly, jumping off of Ebony's bed and running out the room. Ebony sat up and gave a huge yawn. Sometimes summer holidays were more tiring than the school terms.
Ebony was seventeen years old, and was looking after her six year old little brother while their parents were on their second honeymoon in Malta. She slid out of her bed, and walked slowly to the bathroom. She brushed her teeth and had a quick shower, before slowly returning to her room, with a towel round herself. She sat at her dresser and looked in the mirror. She saw a pale-skinned girl with bright green eyes, and long black hair that fell elegantly past her shoulders, which was still very soggy after her shower. She yawned again and after drying herself and getting dressed in her grey jeans and black jumper, blowdried her hair.
She went downstairs to the kitchen and found Jack chewing on a piece of toast. He looked up at her with the same emerald eyes she had.
"I love going to lake, don't you?" he grinned excitedly. Ebony smiled back,
"Yeah, it's great." She got out a slice of bread from the bread bin and sat next to Jack at the kitchen table.
"Is that all you're having, sis?" Jack asked innocently.
"Yeah," Ebony said, "Not that hungry today." She took a bite out of the bread.
"What's wrong? Are you feeling ill then?" Jack asked, finishing his slices of toast, and looked up at her in worry. Ebony was going to take advantage of this question, and say that she was ill so she wouldn't have to go to the lake and get to go back to bed. But there was so much worry and concern in Jack's voice and eyes, she didn't have the heart to.
"No, I'm fine." Ebony smiled warmly at him. Jack seemed happy with this answer, so smiled back.

"Are you sure he's the one?"
"I'm positive. Gather your team and get him here. By any cost nesessary. But he must be alive." King Islo turned round to face his general, Dyfer, "Go now."
Dyfer nodded and flew off the headquarters, where his team or troops were waiting.

"Come on, Eb!" Jack cheered happily, running in the long grass. Ebony was walking behind him, still a little sleepy from her early wake-up call.
"Why don't you slow down?" Ebony called after him, "We have all day!"
A couple of minutes later, they got to the edge of the lake. Jack scrambled right to the edge and sat cross-legged, staring into the water. Ebony sat down a little behind him, but then layed down on her back, out of breath.
"Eb, can I put my feet in the water?" Jack piped up.
"The fishes might get you then," a voice said behind them.
Jack turned round.
"Charlie!" he grinned, "Hi!"
"Hey, shortstuff!" Charlie grinned back. Ebony sat up and looked behind her. Charlie smiled at her,
"Hey Eb."
"Hello..." Ebony said, her tone sounding the complete opposite. Her and Charlie never really got on. He was a popular, brown-eyed, blonde-haired, pretty good-looking guy, who all the girls wanted. Ebony wasn't keen on those kind of arrogant people.
"Hey Charlie, come sit with us!" Jack said.
"Well, I don't think your sister would appreciate that much." Charlie replied, eyeing Ebony who was still glaring at him.
"Don't mind her!" Jack snapped, and patted the ground next to him, "Come on!" Charlie shrugged and went to sit down next to Jack. Ebony hated the way they got along. Jack saw Charlie as his role model.
"Hey look!" Jack piped up, after a couple of minutes of awkward silence.
"What?" Charlie asked. Jack pointed to along the riverbed to a small creature.
"A frog! I'mma catch it!" and he jumped up and raced toward it. Charlie smiled, but then turned round to look at Ebony.
"You're awfully quiet." he said.
"Gee, I wonder why." Ebony said blankly, staring at the ground.
"Look, Eb, I know we might have been in completely different groups at school, but that was back then," he said gently, "Can't we be friends now?" Ebony looked up, opened her mouth, and was about to say something in reply, when the ground starting shaking.
