CSI (CLUES for SEARCHING the INTERNET)

You will be visiting the Boondall Wetlands and then designing a web site on this topic.  How can we use Search Engines to find information on this topic?

1.  List some keywords you can use to search for this information.  Think both broader and narrower.  Can you think of ten?

We will compare 4 search tools.

• Use a search engine (like Google http://www.37.com/),
• a subject directory ( Librarians' Index ),
• a meta search engine ( http://www.37.com/ ) and
• Yahooligans  http://www.yahooligans.com/

Using the keywords Boondall Wetlands, answer the following

2.  What are the first 3 sites? ( the title is enough)

3.  What are the best 3 sites? (Only look at the first page or screen) Why?  List 3 good points and any bad points about these sites.

4.  Which web site was easiest to use?  Why?

5.  Which search engine was easiest to use?  Why?

6.  Try other keywords or search tools.  (there are more on  this page .) Can you find any other useful sites for your web page?

7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of searching the Internet and Using books?
