Filipino Montrealers to Mark Rizal’s Martyrdom
MONTREAL - Inspite of the Christmas holidays, the Order of the Knights of Rizal (Quebec Chapter) and member’s of the Filipino community will gather for a floral and candlelight ceremony at the Filipino Center on Dec. 30, 2000, to mark the 104rd anniversary of the martyrdom of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
The simple ceremony, will start at 7.00 p.m. with the singing of the national anthems of Canada and the Philippines. Master of ceremony of the event will be Sir Freddy Espinosa, who will deliver a short inspirational talk citing Dr.Rizal’s teachings and martyrdom as a source of inspiration not only for Filipinos but also for people around the world. Former Federation President Natalie Pelausa will deliver the invocation citing the lasting legacy of Rizal and will lead the laying of flowers and lighting of candles by the participants. A choral group will sing “Bayan Ko”, a stirring song symbolizing the struggle for freedom by the Filipinos.
After the ceremony, a small salo-salo will take place courtesy of the attendees and by FAMAS President Carlos Reyes Sr. and the FAMAS Board of Directors.
The Knights of Rizal (Quebec Chapter) were inducted by the Knights of Rizal of Toronto last October 1999, at Kent Park Pavilion in Montreal. The conferment rites were conducted under the Charter of the Order of the Knights of Rizal of the Philippines including its Code and By-Laws.
Inducted were: Gaddy Jipos, Dr. Bart Javier, Amir Billones, Edmaur Valdez, Arum Puri, John Linden, Tony P. Fernandez, Bert Abiera, Manding Villapando, Freddy Espinosa, Joe Espinosa Sr., Sol Mendoza, and Joe Bustamante. Other members of the Order include FAMAS President Carlos Reyes, and Boy Tino, among others.
As well, since 1958 up to the present, the Kababaihang Rizalista, Inc. and the Kabataang Pangarap ni Rizal (Kapariz), a Rizal youth organization, continue to work in harmonious alliance with the organizations of the Knights of Rizal around the world and with the Manila-based Supreme Council of the Order of the Knights of Rizal.
