Police cars surrounded the small patch of woods Inspector Weiss stood in front of a group of police officers. "I want roadblocks within a five mile radius of these woods. He'll be on foot. He couldn't have gotten car. Does everyone understand?" They nodded in unison. "Good. Let's catch this guy."
An officer from another section of the woods approached Kate, a distraught but somewhat relived, Victoria behind him. "Ma'am. Victoria Slater, the victim's sister."
"I know who she is. Thank you." She nodded him off. "Good evening Victoria."
"Thank you for calling me. Where is he?"
"They're preparing him for the ride to the hospital."
"H-how is he?"
"I didn't see much of him… but what I saw wasn't good Victoria…"
She sighed heavily somewhat expecting something like this. "Where's Thomas? Rotting in a jail cell I hope..."
"We…haven't found him yet."
"What?" She asked with shock in her voice.
"He must have gotten away somehow… I really don't understand it myself…"
"My God this nightmare will never be over…"
Kyle lightly tapped on April's door, a plate of food covered by tin foil was in his hand. She opened the door and looked at him curiously. She looked rough he thought.
"Hi April… I heard you weren't going to go to your parents for Thanksgiving so I thought I'd bring you some turkey and stuff over. Mom fixed a huge feast… she says hey by the way." His thoughts were spacey, he was trying to comfort her. "Look April, Simone told me you were having a pretty rough time lately. I'm sorry. If there's anything I can do… feel free to talk to me. I'm still here for you."
She took the plate of food and threw it at over the balcony. "I don't need your food and I sure as hell don't need your pity Kyle." She slammed the door in his face.
Charlotte Robinson sat at the head of the table looking at Ethan, Noah and Simone. "Well Sarah chose a great time to go out of town. After all Thanksgiving only comes along once a year." She sighed. "I'm sorry. I'm just upset… I'm upset my two sons aren't here, I'm upset my granddaughter isn't here and I'm mostly upset because my husband isn't here…" Her voice caught on a tear.
Ethan rose from his chair and embraced his grandmother. "I'm sorry grandmother…"
"Where did Victoria go?"
"I don't know mother. She said it was something very important."
"Honestly. We can't even sit down and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. You think it was something about Nicholas?"
"No… I don't think so. She would have said something." She looked behind her. Her mother was staring out the window with her. She let the drapes fall back to their normal position. "Well there's no sense in us going hungry."
As Anna and Phyllis began to sat down the phone rang. "What could it be now?" Anna exclaimed. Phyllis got up to get it. "Please get rid of whoever it is." She looked at the large meal. "No enjoying Thanksgiving isn't an option in this family." She pulled off a leg of the turkey and began eating it.
"Damnit!" Laurie blasted her horn again. "Since when did everyone in this entire town become such suck ass drivers!" She ran her fingers through her hair. "Damn. Damn. Damn." Traffic had been backed up for an hour. All she wanted to do was drive to JFK International and see her family. She shrugged as she blasted her horn for the third time.
Austin put his hands in his jean pockets as he strolled down the sidewalk. "It would blow to be in that traffic…" He really didn't know where he was going. The campus was closed for the holiday and he didn't have any family… He had been in the town for four months and still no sigh of his father.
Laurie glanced at the people walking down the sidewalk. "Lucky bastards…" She muttered. Her eyes caught a handsome young man walking by himself. "Oh… Nice." He turned his head to look at traffic. "Oh God Austin…" What was he doing? She didn't think he had any family. Why was he just walking around? Was he planning on doing it all night? No Laurie don't do it. Stay in the car." She coached herself. Since when did she become a knight in shining armor? Wasn't it supposed to be the other way around? She rolled down the window. "Austin!" He turned around quickly. "Come here."
"Hey Laurie…"
"Don't you hey Laurie me. What are you doing?"
"Walking around…"
"Why?"
"Uh… I really don't have anywhere else--"
"Get in the car." Oh God Laurie why'd you do it?
He sat in the leather seat. "I thought you were mad at me…"
"I am…"
"I didn't think we were on speaking terms."
"We're not."
"Oh… Okay."
Charles Robinson stepped into his house and placed his bag on the ground. "Hello? Anyone here?"
Simone turned the corner. She gasped at the man and grabbed a letter opener - the nearest weapon - "Who the hell are you? Get out. I'll call the police."
"I believe the question, my dear, is who are you?"
"Excuse me?"
"Last time I checked I owned this house. Now tell me who are you?"
"You own this house eh? The man that owns this house is Charles Robinson. He's in Washington D.C. Nice try though. Get out. I will call the police."
He took a few steps toward the woman. "Look, I don't who you are but how about getting out of my way?"
Was this guy insane or something? Maybe he escaped from the mental institution, it wouldn't have been the first time. Her mind raced trying to justify why this man was in front of her. No he's dressed way too nicely to be from a mental institution.
Noah walked into the foyer. "Simone what's going -- Dad?"
"Hey son. Have someone get my bags for me, will you? Where's everyone at?"
"Grandmother's around. Sarah's out of town for the weekend."
"And who's this woman?" Simone had not moved from her position - still holding the letter opener in her hand.
"This is Simone, my fiancée."
The letter opener fell to the ground. "So you're really Charles Robinson…"
"Yes I am."
"Oh…" She laughed nervously. "I thought you had broken in… There have been reports of a prowler in the neighborhood. I guess I let my imagination get the best of me…"
"So this is Simone, Noah? She's very pretty. I'm going to go to the kitchen. I'm starved."
Simone watched him walk away. "So that's your father…"
Victoria walked into her brother's hospital room. The nurse had put him on something to make him sleep. She sat beside him on the bed. His face was badly bruised and swollen. She gently finger-combed his hair. "You're safe now Nicholas… Nothing can harm you…" She didn't even want to think about what happened while he was with Thomas. Thomas was a sick twisted man. It was no telling what he had done to Nicholas.
"Little bastard." Thomas walked gingerly into the room. Victoria quickly stood guarding her brother. "He had some fight in him… He never believed for one minute that he wasn't going home."
She went to scream but nothing came out.
"Ah… Alls well that ends well I suppose… It didn't work out quite how I wanted it to but nothing really ever does, does it Victoria?"
She couldn't even move. It was as if she were frozen in her position.
"I got away before that inspector bitch could find me. You didn't think they'd catch me did you? Oh no… They'll never catch me… Never
