Maria looked up through her tears and the two women standing over her and Ethan. "Oh God… I've got to go." She slipped out of Ethan's embrace and stood up. "I've got to go." She muttered again and ran off.
He went to run after her again but felt a grip on his arm.
"Ethan… what's going on?" Sarah asked.
"There was a huge bruise on her face. It looked like someone had hit her. Is something wrong Ethan?" Simone asked gently.
"I don't know… I don't know. All I know is I need to go after her. You two scared her off. Simone give me the keys to your car."
"Ethan you're in no shape to be driving."
"I think that decision is up to Simone."
She shrugged. "Oh… um…" She reached into her pocket. "Here. Just don't wreck it… or anything…"
"I'll be back later." He said quickly as he darted towards Simone's car.
He held the front section of the newspaper in front of his face as Laurie and her mysterious date walked by. He put it down. She had her hand wrapped around his arm. What in the hell was going on?
"Thanks for dinner Philip. I had a really great time."
"You're welcome." He opened the passenger door to let her in and closed it.
"Manners too… my, my, my."
He got into his car and started it. "I was planning on going to a bar after this. Would you like to go with me?"
"Eh… I'd rather not Philip. I've had a pretty rough day. I mean I slugged a girl for God's sake. And believe me nothing would satisfy me more than to go out and get trashed out of my mind. But I really need some alone time to… gather my thoughts. Can I take a rain check?"
"Sure."
Amir walked into one of the popular downtown bars. This is what he needed to help bring him out of his slump. A good atmosphere and to get a good buzz on. He pulled up a stool by the bar and sat down.
Mia poked him in the side. "Hey good looking."
"Hey Mia."
She sat beside him. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing… just uh… Wait. Mia you're not twenty-one…"
She pressed her finger up against his lips. "Shh…"
"Oh… yeah… The good ol' days. Sneaking into bars with fake ID's."
"Shut up. You sound like you're fifty. Good ol' days. Please."
He noticed the faint bruise on her face. He gently rubbed it. "Nice battle scar."
"Ha… you should see the other girl."
"Uh oh…"
"Yeah, it happens. Let me buy you a drink. Looks like you're alone. Maybe we can be each other's dates."
"Mia…"
"I'm just kidding. Loosen up. Bartender! Give me and this handsome man beside me a drink."
"Shouldn't I be buying you drinks…?"
"Screw tradition."
"Darlings, Brad is picking me up soon. We're going out to dinner. I'll be back later. Kisses." She walked out of the kitchen and headed towards the door.
"Our mother dating a twenty-nine year old…"
"I guess it isn't much different than the time she dated that sixty-five year old…"
"I just don't get it Nicholas. She's got so much money as it is. I mean is she afraid she'll live to two hundred and fifty?"
"Maybe this relationship is genuine…"
"I seriously doubt that. All though I can definitely see the attraction…"
"Ew… what if they're having sex?"
"Oh God Nicholas, that's disgusting. Get your mind out of the gutter. And what's worse is he'll be tainted then. Poor guy he doesn't have a clue of what he's gotten himself into…"
He pulled the car off to the side of the road and jumped in front of Maria. There were tears streaming down her face. "Maria. Get in the car." He said softly.
"I-I can't… I won't go back to your house. They all saw me. They weren't supposed too. It was stupid really. Expecting just you to be home."
"Please get in the car." There was a hint of desperation in his voice. "Please."
She turned around and looked at the car. "Just don't take me back to your house… I don't want them knowing."
"I won't." He drove to the docks of the city. He parked the car and they walked to the edge of the docks and sat on a bench. "Did he do that to you…?"
"Yes…" She said meekly.
"What happened?"
"I-I'm not really sure. He came in so angry… and said we weren't going to have a Christmas… and… I said something under my breath about him always spending money on his gambling and cigarettes and he completely flipped." She paused for a moment. "Take me home Ethan."
"No Maria. It isn't safe there. Stay with us for a few days. I'll buy you some make up to cover it."
"Nothing can cover this…"
"We'll come up with something. Please stay at my house."
"Ethan, I can't. Take me home. You know I'll get there somehow. Even if it means walking again."
"Fine… Fine. I'll take you…"
"Hey Laurie." Austin had just caught her as she was walking into her dorm.
"Hey Austin. Come in." She threw her purse on the coffee table and sat down.
"I'm glad I caught you. I really needed to talk to you… about the other day… I feel really bad about what happened. If I knew you weren't ready I would have never tried to have sex with you. I'm sorry…"
She smiled. "You're so sweet and understanding Austin. I really thought I was ready… I was just so caught up in the moment with you and then reality just hit me and… I don't know what happened. Thank you. Most guys would have just called me a cold fish and blew me off."
"I'd never do that to you Laurie."
"Thank you…" Her mind trailed to the events of the day. "I slapped Mia today."
"What?"
"She had sex with Kyle and told April."
"Damn…"
"Yeah so I slapped her and I really just wanted to jump on her and beat her face in but luckily April stopped me."
"I just don't understand that girl… at all…"
"No. Mia I really need to go."
"You listen here buster." She slurred, "we're on a date. You're not leaving me."
"Mia, we're not on a date. You came up with that idea after your fourth beer."
"Just what are you saying buster?"
"I'm saying you're drunk Mia. And I'm saying I need to leave. Now I can call you a cab to take you home."
"I don't want to leave."
He grabbed his coat off the stool he was sitting on. "Well, then Mia. I'll talk to you later." This was just a bit too much for him tonight. He started to walk off but Mia grabbed him.
"Mia…"
"Please. Don't leave me. I don't want to be all alone."
"Mia--"
"I'll take her from here." Philip walked up towards Mia and Amir.
"Thank you. Now Mia you won't be alone. Good night." He walked out of the bar as quick as he could so he wouldn't have to hear a response from the drunken Mia.
"And who the hell are you buster?"
"Buster just left. I'm Philip."
"Well Philip, you're my date for the night. Now buy me another beer."
April took in a deep breath and knocked on Kyle's door. Within a matter of seconds he opened the door. She stood there for a moment looking at him. She didn't know what to say. She wanted to say something.
He looked at her curiously wondering if he should say something. Hopefully he wouldn't get food thrown at him again.
Was there really anything she could say? She threw her arms around him and grasped him tightly. "Oh Kyle…" She said as tears started to form in her eyes.
Felicia took her glasses off and rubbed her temples. There was no way that Elizabeth would betray her. Elizabeth was her best friend, they were old colleagues, they graduated at the top of their class together. There was no way…
"Your friendship with her will be your downfall."
She jumped up. Not again… Her aunt was in front of her desk.
"She'll take everything from you. Just like you took everything from me." Gregory Smith was now in the room.
"It's a vicious circle, darling." Kyle was beside him.
"Get away from me! Leave me alone!" She backed up again the wall shouting at the figures in the room. She covered her face. "Just go away."
Elizabeth opened the door quickly and ran over to Felicia. "My God Felicia, what's wrong?"
She uncovered her face and held on to Elizabeth firmly. "Elizabeth you'd never betray me right?"
"O-Of course not Felicia…"
"She's lying."
"Don't believe her."
"Remember she will be your downfall…"
"How long are you staying?" Sarah asked her father.
"Until New Year's. Then its back to D.C."
"I wish you'd stay longer…"
"Sarah, you know that is not an option."
She shrugged. Sometimes she wished her father were still just the mayor of Heaven Beach. All this political nonsense. "Dad--" She rolled her eyes as she heard the doorbell ring. "I got it." She walked down the foyer and opened the door. "Amir…"
"Sarah. I can't do this. I just can't."
"Do what…?"
"If you're mad at me, let me know. If I've done something wrong. I-I'm sorry. I--" He noticed her eyes light up as she looked past him. "Sarah?" He turned as he saw her suddenly run out of the house and jump into a man's arms.
"Trevor!"
He lifted her off the ground, twirled her around and kissed her. "Hey baby." He placed her back on the ground.
She touched his face. "How are you here? Is it really you?" She began to cry tears of joy. She embraced him tightly. "Trevor. You're free…"
Amir had watched the entire scene in shock. "Now everything makes sense…" He said to himself and began to walk towards his car.
She let go off him. "Oh wait." She turned around quickly. "Amir--" He wasn't there. Her eyes caught his car backing out of the driveway. "Oh shit…"
"April…"
"Kyle. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for treating you badly. You made one mistake and I should have given you another chance. I don't know what else to say. I'm sorry. That's really all that I can say. Do you forgive me?"
"Of course I do… April."
"Oh thank God. I was so worried."
"But I need to tell you something…"
"What is it?"
"I, um, well I got a fax yesterday from Siobhan Lane of Pinon Hallow, Colorado. It turns out they're looking for another attorney to work in their district attorney office. I over-nighted my resume the night I got it. It sounded, from her letter, like they really need someone with a lot of experience and I'm sure I'll be a shoe-in. I mean, let's face it my career in Heaven Beach is over and really what I need is to be in a new environment. With new opportunities and new… people… April I'm--"
"It's fine Kyle. You have to do what is best for your career." She fought back another wave of tears. "I understand, really I do." She almost sounded as if she were assuring herself. "I actually need to go…"
"Yeah…"
"I'll talk to you later then." She said matter-of-factly.
"Of course."
She turned around just as the first tear ran down her cheek.
Maria walked into her house. She heard commotion coming from the living room and quickly walked past the kitchen and into the living room.
"Maria's home!" Her mother said excitedly. She walked over to her daughter and put her arm around her waist. "Look at it all Maria… Look at it."
Maria looked up in awe at the tall, beautiful, full Christmas tree and underneath the tree was mountains of presents… there had to have been over fifty presents under the tree. "How… what…"
"It's a miracle Maria. A Christmas miracle." Her mother said, gleaming.
Her father hugged her. "Anything to make my little girl happy."
She tensed up at his touch. "T-Thank you…"
Phyllis walked through the threshold of her house. "I'm home." She called out as she set her purse down on the table.
"Hi mom." Nicholas said as he walked into the living room with a large bowl of popcorn in his arms. She poked her head into the living room and saw Nicholas sit beside Victoria. "What's going on?"
"We're watching The Hours."
"Ah… well…" She had never seen her children so close together. It was a nice sight. The phone rang and she picked it up. "Hello?"
"Hello. Can I speak with Phyllis please?"
"This is she…" She recognized the woman's voice but could not picture her face.
"Phyllis, this is--"
"Adel Davis! My God. I cannot believe it. It's so good to hear from you. It has been too long, far too long."
"Phyllis, I wish I had called you under better circumstances…"
"Why darling, what's wrong?"
"I have a favor to ask of you."
"Of course, Adel, anything."
"My youngest has had a bit of a bad break up and now she's accusing him of something utterly insane and I'm afraid if he stays here any longer things will start going badly for him."
"How awful darling. But tell me, how can I help?"
"Phyllis you must understand you're the only person I trust… Can Kip move in with you until all of this blows over?"
"You don't even need to ask Adel. Of course he can stay with us."
"Thank you, so much."
Mia stumbled into Philip's apartment. "Where's the liquor? You promised me liquor." She said at the top of her voice.
"Shh. Don't you think you should pace yourself?"
"You let me be the judge of that." She was barely able to take a seat on a stool at the bar of the apartment. She ran her fingers over the marble counter top. "Mmm… nice."
He poured Mia a shot of whiskey and handed it to her. She threw it back. He leaned up against the bar. "So Mia… tell me your darkest secret…"
"Ha… It's going to take another one of those for me to tell you."
He poured another shot and handed it to her again.
She stared at the blurry vision of the shot. "Yeah…" She drank it quickly and looked Philip in the eyes.
"So…"
She suddenly burst out in tears.
"What is it?"
"Oh Philip… it's too awful to tell…"
"Mia… you can tell me…"
"Don't tell anyone. It would run my life."
"It can't be that bad."
"Philip… I was… molested as a child…"
