Laurie sat in her seat onboard the airplane. She fastened her seatbelt as the stewardess had instructed. They plane was beginning to take off. She was unable to see her family during Thanksgiving due to snow closing down the airport that connected her flight to San Francisco. Luckily it wasn't snowing there today. She gazed outside the window watching Heaven Beach below her. "Austin…" She said softly as she touched the window.
Noah lightly tapped on his grandmother's bedroom door. "Grandmother…" He pushed the cracked door open. Charlotte was sitting on her bed, her back facing the door. "Grandmother…" He walked over to the bed and sat beside her. "Are you okay?"
"It's my first Christmas without your grandfather… He loved Christmas so much. He would always dress up as Santa and give out presents, do you remember that Noah?"
"Yes…" He noticed the tears running down her face.
"I just wish we could have had one more Christmas together…" She wiped her tears and rose from the bed. "Come on Noah. We mustn't keep everyone waiting."
He placed his arm around her as they walked out of the bedroom. "I know it doesn't seem like it now Grandmother. But the pain will heal. You have to believe that."
"I don't think it ever will…"
Mia woke up from her sleep. "Oh… ow…" She rubbed her forehead. Hangovers were the worst. The man beside her stirred. She looked at him with a surprised expression.
He slowly opened his eyes and noticed the young woman staring at her.
"Who are you?"
"Philip…"
She quickly grabbed the sheet and covered her nude body.
"When did you become so shy?"
"I don't know you… Get out of my--" She looked around her surroundings and soon realized that wherever she was wasn't her dorm room. "Uh…"
"You don't remember? We met at a bar last night…"
"I was with Amir… and honey you are certainly not Amir Chazel." Her thoughts drifted to Amir. He had come into the bar she was at dressed in a tight, silk shirt that exposed his well-built body. She smiled at the sight. She quickly snapped back to reality. "I think I'm going to go…"
He stretched his arms up over his head. "You gave me quite the Christmas present last night…"
"Pig." She got out of the bed and collected her clothes across the room. She dressed quickly and opened the bedroom door. "Well, Philip, I hope you did enjoy last night because it was the first and last time for me." She slammed the door and walked out of the apartment.
Simone opened the door to two teenagers that she did not recognize. "Um, hi. Can I help you?"
"Hi. Is Ethan home?"
"Ethan. Of course. Come in." She stepped into the living room. "Ethan there's people here to see you." Ethan stood up from sitting on the couch with Sarah and Trevor and walked into the foyer. "Hey Monica and Lucas." He was surprised to see them.
Monica held a present in her hand. "Hi Ethan. Lucas and I just wanted to drop this off for you so you could open it for Christmas."
"We're leaving in an hour to go visit our brother and cousin in Ginger Falls and your house is on the way to the airport and Monica didn't spend three and a half hours getting ready--" He was interrupted by Monica slapping his chest.
He chuckled at his friends. "Well, thank you, both, and have a nice trip."
"I'm sure we will. Bye Ethan." She kissed him on the cheek and walked towards the door.
"I think a handshake will do fine for us Ethan." Lucas joked as she shook Ethan's hand. "Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas you two." He said as his friends walked out of the house.
Austin sat in his small motel room channel surfing. He gave up with a groan and shut off the television. He sighed. He had hoped by Christmas he would have found this long lost father that his mother told him was in Heaven Beach. He had no idea where to start. Maybe he should just start asking random people on the street. He could see it now 'Hey, you wouldn't happen to be missing a son would you?' How ridiculous. What made this holiday even worse was he was completely alone. Laurie was well on her way to San Francisco by now. And currently he wasn't in love with any other woman. What a sucky holiday…
Mia swiftly walked down the sidewalk. Where in the world was she going to go? The campus was closed. She would probably have to stay in some trashy motel. Great. She ran into someone that was walking towards her. "Hey! Why don't you watch where you're going!" She shouted at the man. He turned around and she gasped. "Luke-I mean Professor Campbell. I'm sorry."
"Pardon me Mia. Please excuse the formalities. We're not in the classroom. How are you?"
"I'm fine. Just…"
"Why are you out? Shouldn't be with your family?"
"I spending the holiday alone this year."
"Ah. Same here."
"Oh? I'm sorry."
"Yes…"
"Well. We don't have to spend Christmas alone. We could spend it together…"
Kate Weiss met April Moore outside the Robinson's door. "Hey April."
"Hey Kate. They force you to come too?"
"No. I came willingly." The door opened. Charles and Kate's eyes met. "Charles Robinson. How in the hell are you?" They met in a tight embrace.
It had always been rumored at the hospital that Charles and Kate had been having an affair for over ten years. Who believes in silly little rumors anyway? April thought to herself. After Charles and Kate's embrace April shook Charles' hand. "Merry Christmas. I'm April."
"Pleased to meet you."
"April's a doctor at the hospital." Kate said. "One of the best."
"I'm certain my mother is proud to have such a fine doctor at her hospital. Well, ladies do come in."
Simone hugged April as she came in. "I'm glad I talked you into coming. No sense in spending the holiday alone."
"Shall I make the eggnog Phyllis?" Anna asked.
Phyllis picked up a bottle of liquor and looked at it. "Let's try something new this year mother."
"Like what?"
"Why Sambvca of course."
"Honey, what in hell is Sam-something."
"Mother, don't act ignorant. It's not becoming of you. You know my Italian friend, Paulo. Well, he said we should try this instead of eggnog for Christmas dinner."
"Fine."
"Have a shot with me mother." She poured the Sambvca into the crystal-stem shot glasses and handed one to her mother. She lifted her shot glass. "To us."
Anna lifted her shot glass. "To us." She repeated.
"Well. My, my that is quite good…"
"Mia… I don't think that would be a good idea…"
"No one has to know Luke. We can order in and have our own private Christmas dinner. It'll be lovely. Come on. What do you say?"
"Eh… Sure. Why not?"
"That's that right attitude."
They got into his car and drove to a two-story house just five minutes away from downtown Heaven Beach. "I can see the University pays well."
Luke unlocked the front door and walked in. "Come in." He invited Mia.
She walked into the house. "Hardwood floors, very nice."
"Thank you. But watch out--"
Before he could finish his sentence Mia slipped on the slick hardwood floors and fell on her bottom. "Ow…"
He kneeled down next to her. "Mia, are you okay?" He tried to stop his smirks.
She playfully hit him with her purse. "Don't laugh at me."
"I was just going to say, I had gotten the floors polished two days ago so the floor are really slick and I'm sure those heels didn't help any."
"Damn me for being fashionable."
Charles stood at the head of the table lifting his crystal glass filled with sparkling white wine in his hand. "Before we began our dinner I would like to a propose a toast." He paused for a moment and began. "First of all I would like to acknowledge my loving family. Without you I don't know where I would be today. You are the best family anyone could ask for, though we have our flaws, we are always there for each other when it comes down to it."
Who in the hell was he trying to impress? Sarah thought to herself.
"To my daughter Sarah, may you be blessed with love this year and find the man of your dreams."
She nodded her thanks.
"To my son, Noah, and my soon-to-be daughter, Simone. May marriage bring you two everlasting love and friendship. And perhaps my first grandchild?"
"That'll be a few years pop…" Noah said. The people at the table all chuckled at his comment.
"To my nephew, Ethan. No one is more pleased than me to have you living in this house and sitting at this table again. You are a true blessing to this family."
"To my mother. May this year bring you happiness once again and the pain of my father's death subside."
"And lastly, to the dear friends that are with us to share this meal with us, Kate, April and Trevor. Thank you for joining us. This holiday would not be the same without your presence here with us."
At the conclusion of the toast everyone stood up and clanked their glasses together.
Kyle threw his keys on the table and walked over to the answering machine, the red light was flashing. He pressed play.
"Merry Christmas, this is Siobhan Lane from Pinõn Hallow. I'm the member of the committee picking a new attorney for the district attorney's office and we'd like to offer you the job, and we would need you the first week in January. You can reach me at (303)555-6514 if you have any question. Congratulations and I hope you are having a wonderful holiday."
He wouldn't have thought she would have responded this quickly. The first week of January? "Damn… I have a lot to get done…"
Phyllis stood up but quickly grabbed the table for support. She opened her eyes widely as if trying to sober up.
Her mother rarely got drunk, if any during the year, but of all the times for her to be drunk. Victoria thought to herself.
"Yeah… Uh… Toast. Yes. It's time for the toast."
Nicholas almost burst out into laughter at the sight of his mother, drunk off of her butt, trying to propose the toast. She had drank at least three of those shots of Sambvca in only an hour's time.
"Nicholas." She slurred, "you're back home. And if I ever saw that mother fu--"
"Whoa mom!" He raised his hands in protest. "I think we all know where that was headed."
"Victoria. You need to get a man."
"Mom… please, not at Christmas dinner."
"Mother. I love you. Even though you love Faye more than me."
"Phyllis--"
"But you're not living with Faye now are you?"
"This isn't the place honey."
"To Brad, who I am happily married to." Phyllis leaned towards Brad and kissed him roughly on the lips.
Victoria spit out her water. "What?" She asked in complete shock.
"Oh dear God there goes the tongue…" Nicholas turned his head from the sight of his mother kissing a twenty-nine year old.
"And to Kip Davis. You've been a great addition to the family." She looked around the table for him. "Oh… he hasn't moved in yet…"
"Whatever next…" Anna groaned.
"Who's Kip?" Victoria asked in the same state of shock.
"Adel's son."
"Who's Adel?" Nicholas asked.
"Let's eat." Phyllis said wildly as she threw back her shot.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
Let your heart be light,
From now on our troubles
Will be out of sight.
Maria walked out of the house and looked up at the clear night sky. The stars were brightly twinkling. She wondered how long this nice spell of her father's would last.
Maria's mother stepped outside and gently rubbed her daughter's arms. "Won't you come inside? I fixed you a cup of hot chocolate."
Maria turned and faced her mother. Tears began to form in her eyes. "Oh mom…"
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on our troubles
Will be miles away.
Victoria looked out the window. She sighed heavily. Her mother was married to a twenty-nine year old and some stranger was moving in to the house… Just great… What else could go wrong?
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Trevor and Sarah sat on her bed kissing each other. She removed his t-shirt and pushed him down on the bed. "God I've bet you've waited for this forever." She laid on top of him began kissing his neck and slowly moved down his chest and stomach.
Through the years
We all will be together
If the Fates allow
Mia walked over to where Luke was seated and straddled him. "Make love to me Luke." She whispered as she began passionately kissing his neck.
Hang a shining star
On the highest bough,
And have yourself
A merry little Christmas now
