A Private Hospital Room
"Ethan Jesse Robinson. I have never been more embarrassed before in my life." Charles spat out at Ethan.
"If what you say is true, which is highly unlikely mind you, then you have nothing to worry about Uncle. If what you say is true that paternity test will show up negative."
"And it will. I was always careful when I had affairs… always. My career is too important for some slut to come along and say I fathered her child."
"My mother was not a slut." Austin said advancing towards Charles.
Ethan placed his hands on Austin's chest. "Just let it go, let it go."
Doctor April Moore walked into the small room and closed the door. The results were in her hand.
"Doctor Moore. I cannot thank you enough for agreeing to do this in secret. My career would be ruined if this leaked to the press."
"Mister Robinson, I don't think you have anything to worry about."
"What?" Ethan asked crossing to her.
"The results turned out negative. Charles is not Austin's father."
"H-How can that be…? Austin's the kid in the picture, the picture I found. There's no getting around it… It's not possible…"
The Slater Home
Phyllis knocked on the door before entering the bedroom. She saw the young twenty-two year old sitting on the bed, his back turned to the door, he was holding something in his hands.
"Darling, I just got off the phone with your mother. I told her you were doing fine and adjusting well. Although I don't think that was completely true. I suppose I fudged a little so she wouldn't worry about you any more than she does." She spoke softly and sat beside him. "Is that Pam? She's quite beautiful. I can see…" He opened the nightstand drawer and put the picture inside. "Well I'm certain you don't want to talk about her." She placed a hand on his shoulder as he stared ahead. "I'm worried about you Kip. I know it really isn't my place--"
He rose from the bed, "Miss Slater."
"Phyllis, darling."
"Phyllis. I know you have good intentions but I really don't feel like talking right now."
She nodded understandingly. "I know this is hard on you. I just want to let you know I'm here for you and so is Nicholas and Victoria. Well, I'll leave you alone now. If you need anything just let me know." She shut the door behind her and sighed. "Poor child…"
The District Attorney's Office
Jonathan Winters walked into Elizabeth's office. She smiled, "what can I do for you Jonathan?"
He sat at a chair across from the desk. "I must say Miss Harper this is the easiest job I have ever worked at. I feel like the tax payer's money is just being wasted." He said with his heavy southern accent.
"Jonathan, trust me things don't stay quite in this town for long… I've learned that since I moved here."
"Well Miss Harper that is certainly not anything for us to do around here. Why don't I take you out for lunch?"
"I would love to go." She smiled again before grabbing her purse and walking out of her office with the new, handsome assistant district attorney. A good ol' southern boy maybe that was just what she needed and luckily enough she was only one year older than him.
The Robinson Home
"Sarah, are you okay?" Simone asked with concerned. The room was dark and Sarah was sitting crouched up in a rocking chair holding a large mug in her hands. "We were all downstairs and well, I was just worried about you."
She shrugged and took a sip out of her mug.
"We've all noticed you haven't been the same since you came in upset from New Year's. You've been locked in your room for a month, were you aware of that? Is there something you want to tell me?"
"… It doesn't matter. It's over."
"What's over?"
"My love life."
She almost laughed but realized Sarah was genuinely upset. "Honey, why is your love life over?"
"I have no luck with men… at all… I go to profess my love to a man and I see him having sex with some skank on his couch."
"Trevor did that?"
"Amir… I didn't tell anyone about him except Ethan. I'm glad I didn't since it's over between us."
"You don't know that for sure. Don't give up that easily. Go to him, it'll do you good to at least bring you closure. If you truly love him you will fight for him."
"I guess your right." She reluctantly agreed.
"Besides I need you at your best for when I start freaking out over my wedding which is next week let me remind you."
She smiled at her soon-to-be sister in law. "All right… I'll go talk to Amir and then I'll be here so you can freak out on me." It was the best thing to do. At least now she wouldn't loose any more sleep over the 'what if's.'
"Now that's the right attitude to have."
A Private Hospital Room
"Well Mister Robinson I'm sorry for causing so much trouble over the past month for you and your family. Especially since it was for nothing." Austin said with a hint of sadness and he headed towards the door.
"Wait!" Ethan called out. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry for giving you false hope. I know that was you in that picture. But I guess I was wrong…" His eyes suddenly widened as an idea popped into his head. "Unless…"
"Unless?"
Ethan didn't give him a response, he ran to the phone in the room and dialed a number. "Dad. It's Ethan. I need you to come home, now."
"Ethan you don't think…?" His uncle asked.
"I know that was him in the picture."
"Your father never lived in North Carolina Ethan…"
"I'm taking the chance. Jacob Robinson can just get over himself and come home."
"Look, Ethan, I appreciate this. I really do but I don't want to be a burden to your family anymore than I already have. I'll just go and we'll forget the whole thing."
"Like hell we will. If the results come up negative again then I'll possibly give up but not now. We've-I mean you have come too close to give up now. Promise me you'll stick around. Please."
"Fine. I'll stick around."
"Thank you."
Laurie's Dorm
Laurie stepped out of the shower and put her white bathrobe on. She grabbed a towel and dried her short, brown hair. An uneasy feeling suddenly crept inside of her. It was like she was being watched... She had that same feeling ever since she came back from San Francisco. That's ridiculous, she brushed the thought aside. There was no way someone was watching her.
She sat in her computer chair and opened up the instant messaging program. "Hey Philip." She typed.
"Laurie what a pleasant surprise."
She moved her mouse over to his screename, curious to see how long he had been online. "Honey are you bored?" She asked.
"What?"
"You've been online for over six hours… I'm coming over in a few minutes. We can hang out."
"I'd love that."
She signed off and shut down her computer. She then walked over to her dresser and pulled out a black spaghetti-strap shirt and blue jeans. Her and Philip had recently become "official," they had been dating since New Year's. She slipped her feet into her boots and walked out.
Philip's Apartment
"Ohh Laurie… Skimpy black shirt and blue jeans, my favorite." He closed the laptop screen and tossed it aside.
The Robinson Home
Simone smiled excitingly as she revealed her wedding dress to April.
"Oh my God… It's beautiful."
"Isn't it?" She ran her fingers over it, smoothing over a wrinkle. "It's perfect, for the perfect wedding. I'm so excited."
"I know you are sweetie."
"And I couldn't have done this without you. I mean hell you practically planned the wedding yourself… April, I'd be honored if you'd be my maid of honor."
"Simone, I'd love to be."
"I'm so happy you said yes. Just think, think this time next week I'll be marrying the man of my dreams…"
Another part of the Robinson Home
Charles, Ethan and Austin walked through the foyer of the home. Charles, still disgusted at Ethan, walked up the stairs to his private wing of the home.
"I shouldn't have agreed to stick around. I've caused enough trouble as it is."
"Austin, dude, you worry way too much. This is the reason you came to Heaven Beach isn't it? To find your family?"
"Yes…"
He turned away from him. "So did I…"
"What? I didn't hear what you said."
He turned back around, "oh… it was nothing."
Noah walked in from the living room. "Ethan, can I speak with you for a moment?"
"Uh, sure." The two men walked into the living room, leaving Austin alone.
"Look if it's about Austin. I'm sorry I accused your father. But it seemed the only logical conclusion."
"No. It has nothing to with that at all."
"Oh?"
"Ethan, will you be my best man?"
He peered at this cousin for a moment. "Did I just hear what…"
"Yes, yes you did."
"Maybe I need to clean my ears because I just heard you ask me if I would be your best man."
"You heard right."
"Oh, wow… I'm honored, to say the least. Of course I'll be your best man. Of course…"
Amir's Home
Sarah brought her hand up to the knocker but shook her head and turned around, walking back to her car. She heard the door swing open.
"Sarah?" Amir called out.
She took in a breath and slowly turned around again.
"Oh God. Sarah." He stood before her. "I…"
Tears began to form in both of their eyes. "Just shut up and kiss me Amir."
He kissed her but broke away. "I love you so much."
"I know, I know. I love you too. I couldn't stand being away from you…"
"I was so afraid you'd never talk to me again. I was stupid, so stupid."
"I was stupid too Amir. I'm just glad it wasn't too late for us to realize we needed each other…"
The Slater Home
Nicholas, Kip and Anna walked into the living room together where they saw Phyllis sitting on the couch watching television. Nicholas found this odd because his mother rarely watched tv. "Mom?"
"Shh…"
Vote for Brian McCall for City Council. For the people and by the people. This is a paid advertisement for the Elect Brian McCall committee.
"That's it!" She rose and threw her hands up wildly.
Nicholas shrugged, not again.
"I'm running for city council!" She sipped her rum and coke. "Isn't it a wonderful darlings!"
"Mother, how much have you had to drink?"
She recounted aloud. "One… Three… Four! This is the fourth one."
Kip smirked. "Does this happen a lot?"
"Apparently."
"Well, Phyllis. That's a great idea. While you're at it I might as well run for the damned mayor!" Anna exclaimed. "First you marry a thirty year old--"
"Twenty-nine…" Nicholas reminded her.
"And now you're running for city council."
"And I'll damn well get it mother." She staggered over to the phone and dialed a number. "McCall. Phyllis Slater. I… uh… me, council." She dropped the phone, which dangled from the desk to the floor. "I told him." She stated proudly.
"She's married to a twenty-nine year old?" Kip asked Nicholas.
"Yeah, Brad."
"Brad? Come on, are you messing with me?"
"No…"
"You're serious? Oh God… I thought that was her son."
He laughed. "No. Unfortunately he's my step-father."
"Let's go all go to dinner to uh… Wait… cele… brate! Nicholas, go get Victor and Traci." She slurred.
"You mean Victoria and Trevor?"
"Yeah… those two."
Le Club Populaire
Noah and his father sat in the dining section of La Club Populaire in a semi-circle, rounded booth.
Charles sipped his scotch. "Are you sure about this Noah?"
Noah threw his napkin down on the table. "Damnit dad."
"Sorry, sorry. I just don't want you to make the same mistake I did with your mother."
"With whom you're still married to…"
"You'll understand it someday Noah. Nearly all marriages turn into just a business agreement."
"Mine won't."
"That's what I said…" He mumbled. "Well, son, I hope you'll be happy."
He couldn't stand his father's always-apparent sarcastic tone. Why did he agree to go to dinner with him? "So dad, let's be honest for a minute. This Austin character is really your kid isn't he?"
"Of course not." He scuffed. "How dare Ethan even think to accuse me of that. After all I gave him and he's not even my own child and this is the thanks I get." He slammed his drink down.
"Dad, do you have to be so pompous all the time?"
"I certainly did not invite you to come along to dinner with me to be insulted."
He shrugged, "whatever."
Pubic Beach
Austin sat on the sandy ground with his arms crossed around his legs. He gazed out upon the blue-green ocean. White caps formed on top of the waves. The sun was setting behind him.
Mia trudged towards him, muttering a curse as . She sat beside him. "Hi…" She said almost meekly to him.
"What do you want?" He asked not making eye contact with her.
"Something wrong?"
"Mia, I'd really prefer to just be alone right now. I've got a lot of things to think about."
"I'm not trying to get you in bed Austin."
"For once?"
"I saw Laurie out with that Philip guy. I still don't understand why you want her so bad. Looks to me like you're fighting a lost cause. I mean after how she just dropped you like that. Seems--"
"God. Will you just shut up?"
"Fine, fine." She stood up and brushed the sand off her pants. "I forgot you can't handle the truth."
"Mia…"
"I'm going, I'm going. But before I go I'm letting you know how I feel. You're too good of a guy for this. You're too good for me and you're sure as hell too good for Laurie. Probably too good for any of the women in this town. I know we've had our differences and I don't blame you for being cold towards me, I just… I don't know. I finally meet a decent guy and he gets stolen from me."
"You never had me."
She nodded her head. "Good night Austin."
Le Club Populaire
"Laurie?"
She blinked being taken away from her thoughts and after a beat smiled, "oh. Sorry Philip."
"You've been zoning out ever since we came here."
"Oh, sorry. Just… tired, I guess." She looked around the dining area and smiled at the people sitting a table over.
"You know them?"
"Not really. They're one of the big families in the town, the Slaters."
"Ah."
She groaned as she saw Mia walking in through the front door and headed towards her direction. "Please don't make her be coming over here…" She said under her breath.
Mia slammed her purse down on the table and glared at Laurie. "You can say what you like about me Laurie Ruerup, but at least I don't go around breaking people's hearts. It's a shame he loves you so much. You're not good enough for him, nobody in this town is." She snatched her purse off the table and walked away.
"Whoa what was that about?" Philip asked.
"Nothing… Just things to do with the past."
"Oh…"
Her mother had thankfully sobered up enough to have a normal conversation with. "Mother, are you sure you want to run for city council?"
"Yes, darling. We've lived here for years, it's about damn near time we have some say in what goes on."
Victoria affectionately placed her hand on Trevor's leg. "All right, I say go for it then."
"Besides it's not like the ones on the board now know what the hell they're doing." Nicholas added.
"Brad, darling. What do you think about it?"
"I agree with Victoria. If it's what you want to do, then you do it."
"Mother?"
"Honey, I don't know why you're asking me. You're going to do it anyway. But you've got my vote."
"Well, then it's settled. I'll start making phone calls tomorrow."
"Excuse me for a moment." Charles placed his napkin on the table, adjusted his pants and walked off to the left.
It was now or never. Mia thought as she watched the older man walk off. She walked over to Noah's table and slid into the booth. "Hi."
"Hi Mia. Long time no see. How have you been?"
"I've been fine." She bit her bottom lip and looked at him. "I read about your marriage in the paper. Congratulations."
"Thank you."
"Its next week isn't it?" He nodded yes. "So this is kind of like your last week as a single man…"
He looked at her strangely for a moment. "I guess it is."
"You want to make the most out of it?"
Charles looked at the reflection in the mirror and splashed cold water on his face. His heart was racing. He looked at his watch. It was too late to turn back now…
Time seemed to go by in slow motion as the five men entered with guns. Victoria pushed her mother over and they ducked under the table for safety. Kip lunged for the young woman sitting at the table next to him, she was frozen in shock.
"Noah!" Mia pulled him towards her, they both landed on the floor.
Charles cringed as he heard the shots being fired. "Please God make my son be okay…"
