The Slater Poolhouse
Victoria hung over the toilet, holding on for support as she prayed to porcelain gods.
Phyllis Slater rushed into the bathroom, “darling, I thought Kip was the one that drank half a tequila bottle last night.”
“Not now mother,” she managed before her prayer session began again.
“Oh, darling, now, let’s not be cranky.” She grabbed a wash cloth and wet it with cool water. She knelt down beside her daughter and pulled the hair out of her face, she placed the wash cloth over Victoria’s forehead. “I remember when I first got pregnant with you, I threw up for a week straight.”
Victoria moved next to the toilet, still clutching on to the side for support.
“Aw, my little girl,” Phyllis frowned as she wiped her face. “That better?”
Victoria shook her head as another wave hit her, Phyllis pulled her hair back again, “yes, a week straight, every morning, I was beginning to think it would never end.” She paused for a second, “oh my God, Victoria you’re not pregnant are you?”
Victoria groaned.
“Well, I was just asking, if I had a hunk of a man like Trevor in my bed, I’d take advantage of it too, oh wait I do!”
“Oh my God, mother! Get out!” She screamed. She quickly turned back towards the toilet.
“Oh, honey, you don’t mean that, come on, let’s get you cleaned up. I got our dresses for the Southern Comfort Ball, you want to talk about, that, huh? Victoria? The Southern Comfort Ball…”
Victoria continued to throw up.
“Well, I suppose you can’t really talk about anything right now, now can you?”
Philip’s Apartment
Philip sat upright and rubbed his eyes. He looked at the clock. It was morning. He grabbed his laptop and turned it on. “Where did you stay last night?” He asked aloud as he looked upon Laurie’s empty bed.
Austin’s Dorm
Ethan nudged Austin, who was asleep on the couch, “hey Austin, wake up,” he whispered.
Austin groaned groggily, “come on Ethan, it’s early.” He turned around.
“Austin!” He whispered sharply.
“What?” Austin asked annoyed.
“Where’s Laurie?”
“In my bedroom, now please be quiet,” he closed his eyes again.
Ethan hit his older brother, “damnit Austin! In your bedroom! Only you would let a perfect opportunity like this pass you up.” He shrugged, “it’s going to be all on me to get him a second chance with her, God knows he needs all the help he can get.”
Amir’s House
Amir pressed play again, he continued to look strangely at the answering machine.
Sarah walked into the living room, “what is it?” She sat in the plush, oversized lounge chair.
“A therapist just called me, he wants me to come down to his office and answer a few questions, it’s about one of his patients.”
Sarah sat still, just staring at her boyfriend. After a few moments she spoke, “But, honey, you don’t really know anyone here, much less anyone in therapy.”
“Actually, I do, Mia Brooks.” He leaned up against the desk.
She shot him a look, “hell no.” She firmly stated jumping out of her chair and walking over to him, “that woman—excuse me, that whore, almost ruined our relationship. No, absolutely not, Amir there’s no telling what she’s trying to pull this time. I don’t have any contact with the girl and I don’t want too. You shut that door six months ago and I will not allow you to open it up again and invite that horrible woman into our lives again. I have had more than enough of Mia Brooks than I care to stand.”
Amir began calmly, “what if she’s actually trying to get help Sarah? It would be wrong of me not to do what I can. You don’t know her like I do, she’s a very troubled young woman, and as long as she’s trying to get help, I see nothing wrong with going down to his office. It’s not like she’s going to be there anyway.”
“Amir, what if this whole thing is a set up to get you back in bed with her, hm? Have you even thought about that one?”
He touched her arm, “Sarah, that is way too much trouble for someone to go through to get someone back, besides, Mia and I didn’t even have anything, we slept together once, that was all we had.”
“Oh don’t be naïve Amir!” She moved away from his touch, “The girl practically stalked you for three months and waited for the right moment, when you were most vulnerable and she pounced on it—literally. Amir, please, I’m begging you, don’t do this.”
“Sarah, I love you, but I have to. I’m going to go upstairs and get dressed and then I’m going to go meet with that doctor.” He kissed her cheek, “I’ll be back soon.”
She watched him walk out of the living room and turned towards the desk, she spotted a vase filled with tulips, a moment later the vase was shattered and the floor covered in water and red and yellow tulips. She shrugged, “Come on Sarah, get it together, you’ve dealt with people much worse than Mia Brooks, you can do this.” She grabbed her purse, “I think it’s high time I paid Miss Brooks a visit.”
The Robinson Home
“Yes, mother, I’m fine.” Simone said for the second time, pacing in her bedroom talking on her cell phone.
“Are you sure? You sound,” Simone’s mother shrugged, “very uneasy. Is something wrong?”
She opened the curtains slightly, peeking outside. “No, nothing is wrong.” She walked over to the bed and sighed. “Mother…”
“Yes?”
“Do you remember Ashton?” She cringed at his name.
“My God, Simone, why on Earth would you bring up--”
“Just answer me.” She opened her bedroom door and nervously looked outside, a second later she shut the door and locked it.
“Of course I do, he’s the reason I lost my baby girl. I get so upset every time--” she began to choke on her words. “Simone, why did you ask about him? It’s been years.”
“Do you know what happened to him?” She sat at her desk, trying to subdue the unnerving feeling of someone watching her every move.
“The last we heard of him was a few weeks after you left. He just kind of dropped off the face of the planet.”
Simone rose and checked the window to make sure it was locked. “Mother, I’ve got to go. I love you.” She ended the call and placed her phone on the desk. “Has he been searching for me this long?”
Austin’s Dorm
“Please don’t go, Laurie.” Austin pleaded. “You’re upset, you don’t need to be alone.”
“I want to be alone. Look, thanks for being there for me last night, but coming here was the worst think I could have done.”
“What do you mean?”
“Austin, this isn’t right,” she touched the side of his face, “I’m with Philip, but every time me and him have a little tiff, I come running into your arms. It’s leading you on and it isn’t right. I love Philip. I want to be with Philip. I’m being selfish, a selfish spoiled little brat and that’s not who I want to be.” She paused for a moment, “I think it would be best if we didn’t see each other any more, I can’t do this any more.” She kissed his lips softly and looked into his eyes, “move on Austin, you deserve much better than me.” She moved past him and walked out of the dorm.
Austin stood there, frozen, unable to comprehend what had just happened. Ethan walked in a moment later, “I swear, I’ve been to this guy’s apartment, his job, I can’t find him anywhere.” He said, walking past his brother. “I was beginning to think he might be laying dead in a ditch somewhere, but then I realized that nothing is ever that easy. I don’t know. After all, tomorrow is another day, am I right?” He turned back towards Austin, “what’s wrong?”
He shook his head, tears formed in his eyes. “Not right now, Ethan.”
He walked back to his brother and touched his arm, “Austin, what happened? It’s Laurie isn’t it? Don’t worry, whatever happened, I can fix it. I’ve just got to get rid of this Philip first.”
“I said not right now!” He screamed, moving away from Ethan’s touch. “My God, don’t you ever listen? Ever since I’ve met you, you’re just so damned hard headed! I tell you no and you don’t listen, you don’t ever listen! You just do as you damned please, I know you’re just a spoiled little rich kid who always gets what he wants, but I’m not going to cater to that. No. I said it, no, no, no, no!”
“Austin--”
“Ethan, I want you to go home. I don’t want you around, do I need to make that any simpler than that?”
“O-okay,” he said weakly. “I’ll, um, just go then…”
Le Club Populaire
Alexandra reached the table, panting out of breath. “Oh, wow, I’m so sorry. I lost track of time getting ready and, yeah, I’m really late.”
Jonathan Winters stood up and kissed her on the cheek, “it was certainly worth the wait, you look amazing.”
She blushed, sitting down. “Thank you.” She smiled, “God, it’s been so long since I’ve been on a date,” she confessed, “I don’t even remember how to act.”
“Acting like yourself is a good thing.” He picked up the drink menu.
“Yeah?”
“What would you like to drink?”
“Oh, um, water, water’s good for me.” She said with a hint of nervousness in her voice. Don’t say anything stupid, don’t say anything stupid. “It just feels good to get out of the house, you know? I feel like I haven’t done a thing since I came back in February. I don’t even really know anyone, except for you, but I guess being gone for ten years doesn’t help at all. Of course, I didn’t really have any friends when I lived here, oh, God, I’m talking a lot of aren’t I? I don’t know, I’m guess I’m just glad to have someone new to talk to, or something, yeah, wow.”
He grinned, “it’s fine, I’m enjoying it.”
The waitress brought their drinks and Alexandra immediately began gulping down her water. Don’t say anything stupid, don’t say anything stupid. “How’s, um, Elizabeth, is it?”
“Yes, Elizabeth, she’s fine, things have been rather boring at the DA’s office.” He said with a sigh.
“Well, I guess that’s kind of a good thing, then, right? So, you and Elizabeth…” She trailed off, hoping he would catch on.
“Me and Elizabeth?” He questioned.
She sighed, “I might as well ask, are two an, item?”
He chuckled, “no, we’re just friends, I don’t mix business and pleasure.”
“I sound like a complete idiot, don’t I?” She frowned.
“Of course not, maybe just a little flighty.” He joked.
“I’ve been called worse, I can assure you that.”
Austin’s Dorm
Austin spoke as he walked towards the door, “I can’t believe you’re back already. Look, I’m really sorry--” he stopped, opening the door, “oh, it’s you.”
“Hey Austin,” Jacob entered the dorm, “I would really like to talk to you. Don’t worry, I’m not here to pay you off, call you a fake, blackmail you, I just want to talk.”
He peered at the father he barely knew strangely, “okay,” he said unsurely.
“Do you mind if I sit?”
“No, no, um, go ahead. C-can I get you anything?”
“No, thank you, I’m fine.” He sat on the couch, “will you join me please?”
Austin nodded his head, taking a seat on the lounge chair across the couch and with a coffee table between them. He wasn’t taking his chances. “So, um, what do you need to talk about?”
Jacob took a deep breath, “I guess I should start off with I’m sorry. I know that doesn’t do a lot of good now, and it’s a good eighteen years too late, but, nevertheless, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for not being there for you, I was young and so stupid,” he shook his head, “so stupid, I was afraid, I was only in North Carolina for the summer, I met your mother, it was just suppose to be a summer fling. When she told me she was pregnant, I panicked and deserted her. I know how wrong that was, and though, I don’t deserve it, I’m asking you to accept my belated apology.” He paused as his thoughts were going in a different direction, “People could say that both of my sons were a mistake because they were not planned, but that is so far from the truth. Both you and Ethan have grown up into amazing young men, with no help from me.” He leaned forward, “All I’m asking for is a second chance, a second chance to be the father I should have been to you. I know we can’t forget the past, and I know I’ll screw up, God forgive me for all the pain I have caused you and Ethan, but, will you give me a chance Austin? And if ultimately you decide to have nothing to do with me, I’ll understand, just please give me a chance. That’s all I ask.”
Austin, with a tear falling down his cheek, nodded his head once more. “I want a father as much as you want your son.”
“Same here.” Ethan said from the doorway, “That’s all I’ve wanted all these years, just an apology, of course, this one wasn’t really my apology, but I won’t make you go through that again.” He turned his attention to Austin, “you’re forgiven too.”
Austin chuckled and embraced his brother, “Thank you.”
Jacob rose, “I’ll leave you too alone.”
“If you want to start being a father, then get over here,” Ethan reached out for his father. It was the first time he could ever remember hugging his father.
The Slater Home
Victoria looked at the pregnancy test as the two solid lines began to form. She threw it up against the bathroom wall, “damnit,” she muttered sinking down to the floor. She wasn’t upset she was pregnant, she rubbed her stomach, “I just wish I knew who your daddy was…”She groaned, not that she wanted either man to father her child.
