Austin’s Dorm
“Austin I can't do this anymore its you and only you. I can't live this lie any longer.” She spoke firmly, “I remember this time last year, I found you wandering the streets on this very holiday, we almost made love that night, do you remember? Austin, I’ve fooled myself since that very night, I’ve turned toward someone I don’t love and I’ve given up the most important thing I could give to a man. I’ve made a lot of mistakes and I regret a lot of things. I’m tired of living in regret. I love you Austin, I always have, I always will. I just want to be with you. Can you find it in your heart to forgive me for all the pain I’ve caused you? All the stupidity?” She took a deep breath, “I remember our first date, we went to the movies, I remember how your lips felt pressed against mine. I remember your smell, that amazing distinctive smell you have. My God, I love you and I have fooled myself for far too long. Take me Austin, right here, right now. I want nothing more but you. I’ll leave Philip, tonight, if you’ll have me.”
“Of course I’ll have you,” he moved towards her and grabbed her up in his arms, “I’ve waited so long for this moment. God, Laurie, I love you.” He held her in his arms for what seemed like hours, making up for lost time. “I love you so much.”
The Robinson Home
Sarah and Amir walked into her former home, which was engulfed with the smell that only a delicious Thanksgiving dinner in the making could provide. Sarah walked into the kitchen and placed her infamous stuffing on the counter and kissed her grandmother on the cheek.
She followed the sound of The Macy’s Day Parade into their living room where her cousin and boyfriend were intently watching Broadway performers. “Hey honey,” she kissed Ethan on the cheek. “I haven’t seen you in forever.”
“I know, I’ve missed my favorite cousin.” He returned the kiss. “How’ve you been?”
She sighed, “It could be better, but you know, I’m content. Although, I doubt I will be after today, my father and mother and your father under one roof. This’ll be a holiday to remember.”
Natasha entered the living room, “darling!” She exclaimed, seeing her daughter. She touched her face, “it’s so good to see you! And Amir! You two look absolutely amazing!” She held onto her daughter’s hands, “now today is going to be a big day for this family, your father is coming into town at any moment, Jacob’s coming with Austin, have you even met him? Oh well, he’s your cousin, or something. Alexandra is bringing her new boyfriend, Jonathan over and Noah and Simone have some important announcement to make. So we absolutely must be on our best behavior. Especially since this very well could be your Grandmother’s last Thanksgiving with us. You know she’s eighty-three don’t you? Oh lord, how time flies!” She finally took a breath, “oh it’s so good to have the family under one roof again! And a roof that wasn’t a courthouse at that! Well, I’m going to help your Grandmother, toodles!” She moved quickly out of the living room.
“Good lord,” Ethan proclaimed, “did you catch any of that?”
“Something about a boyfriend, announcement, Grandmother’s eighty-three.” She gasped, “oh
God! Mom has a new boyfriend and they’re getting married!”
“What?” Charles asked, entering the living room.
“Daddy!” Sarah rushed across the living room to greet her father.
“How’s my darling daughter?” He embraced her and kissed her head. “You look gorgeous.”
A few minutes later, almost everyone had arrived and was sitting in the living room. “So far, so good eh?” Ethan nudged his brother.
Austin took in a deep breath, he was nervous, “yeah, I guess. Oh, I’ve got something important to tell you about later.”
Noah and Simone appeared in the threshold of the living room, a few steps above everyone, holding on to each other. “Guys, if I could have your attention for a moment,” Noah spoke up.
Everyone quieted and turned their attention towards the couple.
“Simone and I will be moving out, we just closed on our new home yesterday.” He said with a smile. “We’ll begin moving out tomorrow.”
After a moment of silence, Natasha’s voice rang out over the small crowd, “I’ll be damned!”
“Uh oh, here it comes,” Ethan whispered to Austin and Sarah.
“Noah you’re my only child still living here! You can’t leave! What will I do?”
Alexandra stepped towards her mother, “Mother, I still live here.” She said dryly.
“Darling, I lived with you for almost ten years, don’t steal your brother’s limelight,” she turned back towards her son. “Noah, you can’t leave.”
“Mother, I’m twenty-six years old. You had all the time to live with your family but you decided to travel abroad for ten years. That’s your own fault and your own doing.” Noah stated calmly.
“Amen!” Charles shouted.
“Oh don’t you start! Not you Charles! At least I’m making a point to spend time with our children now. At least I’m not in D.C. every waking moment and changing floozies every week!”
“That’s the truth of it.” Jacob said loudly.
“As if you have any room to talk Jacob Robinson!” She turned towards him now, “You good for nothing drunken loser! Knocking up some girl you barely know not once, but twice!” She pointed at Ethan and Austin, “prime examples! Behold the bastards of the Robinson family!”
Alexandra buried her head in Jonathan’s chest. Her mother had a knack for picking fights every time she brought her new guy over.
“You bitch!” Jacob got up in Natasha’s face and began a slur of insults.
Within a few seconds, the entire family was screaming at one another, Natasha moving from one person to the next. But, then, a sudden angelic voice called out over them all. They all stopped to find Charlotte in front of them. “Stop it! Stop it right now! My God have mercy on all of you! Look at you, all of you, acting like children! Fussing over things that don’t even matter! Couldn’t you, for once, act like a normal family? Is that so much for an old woman to ask, for her family to show some common decency for a couple of hours? I won’t tolerate this anymore. I don’t blame Noah and Simone for moving out. You all make me want to move out! Move out of my own house that my dear husband bought for me.” She choked on a tear, “Natasha, I want you out of this house, this very instant! You are an instigating, bitter, sniveling woman and I refuse to be around you anymore! You are to pack your things, right now and leave this house and never come back! You were the downfall to this family and I pray we--” she stopped and grabbed her chest and began gasping for air.
“Grandmother!” Sarah screamed as she watched the elderly woman fall to the floor.
Noah immediately began performing CPR as Simone darted for the phone.
Sarah collapsed into Amir’s arms, “no, no, not again… not again…”
Philip’s Apartment
Laurie walked into the candlelit room and tossed her keys on the counter. “Philip?” By the looks of it, Philip had planned a romantic Thanksgiving for two. She sighed. He wasn’t going to make this any easier.
“Hey baby,” he moved to kiss her lips, but she moved her head and he grazed her cheek. He was taken back by this and paused for a moment. “How are you?” He asked with uncertainty.
“We need to talk, Philip, it’s important.”
“I know we do, but let me go first. Laurie, these past few months have been amazing, incredible, but there’s been something missing. Something that will hopefully bring closure to a lot of things.” They both took in a deep breath, anticipating what the other’s response would be. “Laurie Ruerup,” at this point, he got down on one knee, “will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?”
She didn’t breath for what seemed like minutes trying to even slightly form words. This is not what was suppose to happen. “Uh,” she stammered. She sighed, “Philip, I can’t. I’ve lead you on since January, hell, I’ve lead myself on. I’ve tried to force myself to fall in love with you, but I can’t. Philip, there’s another, there has been all along. I’m sorry, I really am. I know what a terrible person I am for having done this.” She shook her head, “I’m sorry,” and turned to leave the apartment.
She hopped into her car and drove away as quickly as possible. She didn’t even stick around long enough for his response. “Damn me for having the worst timing possible,” she muttered.
Philip remained in the same position, staring blankly ahead. His dream was ruined, his perfect dream had been ruined and there was one person to blame… Austin Robinson. He would have his revenge on him yet and bring a pointing reckoning to end him with.
The Robinson Home – Several Hours Later
Ethan, Sarah, Amir, Alexandra and Jonathan sat in the living room, awaiting word from Noah and Simone on Charlotte. Sarah sat on the floor cradled in Amir’s arms, “This just happened to grandfather a little more than a year ago, I can’t loose another family member, this isn’t fair,” she trailed off being caught up by tears. Amir rubbed her head, the only comfort he could bring her.
“I just wish they would call already,” Ethan said wearily.
Without warning, the door came barreling open and Noah came storming in, Simone close behind him, “where is she?” He shouted, “I want her out of this house this very second!”
“Who? Noah what in the hell--” Alexandra jumped up.
“Our mother! I want her out! Right now!” He was mad with fury.
Natasha appeared at the top of the stairs, “N-Noah…”
He bolted up the stairs and grabbed her by her wrists and pulled her down the stairs. “You get out right now, mother and I don’t ever care to see you again!”
“N-Noah, why? But my things--”
“Get out!” He pushed her towards the door. “My grandmother, the only mother I’ve ever known is in critical condition because of you, she could very well die and it’s all your fault. You better be glad I beat dad here. You get out of this house right now or I will have the police throw you out! You’re not welcomed here, you caused nothing but trouble in this family and I won’t stand for it any longer!”
“Noah, darling--”
“Get out!” He shouted.
She shifted focus to Alexandra and Sarah, “w-will you see me thrown out like some dog?” She pleaded. “Please, please, I beg you, stop this. Alexandra, Sarah. Don’t make the mistake--”
“We’ve already made the mistake of letting you back into our lives.” Noah snapped back. “It’s too late, mother, no one can stop me,” he opened the door and shoved his mother out, while she pleaded again with her daughters, “Sarah, Sarah please! Alexandra!” She was met with a shut door.
“You can’t do this to me! Noah! Can you hear me? I am your mother whether you like it or not!” She began to sob and collapsed on the front porch, “please, I beg of you, I have no where to go, please… don’t do this to me. I’m sorry.”
“Noah have you gone mad!” Alexandra exclaimed, “she’s our mother, you can’t do that to her. She doesn’t have any money or any one. She’s all alone out there.”
“And it’s by her own making.” Noah retorted.
“Please, Noah, you’re angry, but don’t let it block your judgment. Please.” Alexandra said, trying to reason with her younger brother.
“No, absolutely not,” he threw his arm to the side, “that woman will never step foot in this house again if I have any say in it.”
Sarah stood up and dried her eyes. She grabbed her purse from a nearby table and walked out of the living room.
“What is she doing?” Noah began to chase after her but was stopped by Alexandra’s grip.
“She’s doing the right thing.” Looking Noah straight in the eyes.
Sarah shut the front door behind her; her mother was still lying on the porch. “Oh Sarah, thank God. My child of reason. I knew you wouldn’t see your mother done this way.”
Sarah dug in her purse and brought out all of her cash, “here mother, this should be enough for a plane ticket and food along the way. I’ll wire some money to you later.”
“W-Where will I go? Sarah, please, I’m begging you, give me a second chance.”
“It’s too late for second chances. Go to your sister’s house in Maryland, that’s all I can think of and she’s probably the only person that will have you at this point.” She placed the money in her mother’s hand. “I love you mother, but you’ve caused far too much damage this time. I’ll send for a taxi, now go, before Noah comes out again.”
“Sarah…”
“No, mother,” she shook her head, “it’s too late.” She shut the door behind her.
Jacob’s Penthouse
“What’s wrong with you?” Cynthia asked coldly as a tear-stained Jacob walked in.
“Cynthia, we’ve got to talk. The deal’s off, our stupid child play is done with.” He tossed his keys aside and sat down on the couch.
“Do what? Oh no, hell no Jacob, I won’t have you getting soft on me now. I haven’t wasted four months of my life for this bullshit.” She approached him angrily.
“There’s more important things involved here, Cynthia.” He said, worn out from the stress of the day.
“Like what?”
“My mother could be dying!” He yelled.
She looked at him insensitively, “oh your mother, the one who cared so much about you that she had nothing to do with you and let you run around getting into trouble every time you turned around. What a grand mother you had.”
“Shut up!” He grabbed her wrist, “do you hear me? Shut up!”
She jerked out of his grip, “oh, hell no, I’ll be damned if I’m playing this game Jacob. You know what, when you man up and stop wasting my time, look me up and maybe I’ll come back. You’ve blown it this time Jacob, and one of these days it’s going to be too late.” With that, she slammed the door, leaving the Penthouse.
Philip’s Apartment
Philip reached up for a shoebox in the closest. He grabbed hold of it and brought it down. Opening it, he smiled wickedly at the gun. “This’ll show her…”
